how does one get an idea of how fast ones harddrive is? In both of the benchmark tests, I am getting lousy results. I am running a SX6000 raid 5 config. with 5 80GB WD 7200 Drives on this pc. The PCMArk2002 is showing mid 500s while the sandra is showing somewhere in the mid 14,000's. According to sandra a stand alone drive is supposed to around 24,000. I have another system running raid 0 using 3 30GB 7200 drives using a fasttrax raid pci card. I forget how the perfomance is on that raid drive, but that PC also has a 100GB WD 7200 SE drive that beats the raid 0 config in sandra. I tried doing a file copy on the two raid setups using a 306MB file, it took 39 seconds to transfer it using the raid 5 setup, while the raid 0 took 35 seconds. Copying the file from the raid 0 to the special edition drive took only 13 seconds, which I can understand why that is faster. Are these times for doing a file copy average, anybody have a scsi setup, how are your benchmark scores. How about copying a file from one part of your disk to another. What's a good way to test the drives?

you listed two of the benchmarks that I feel are about the worst for measuring harddrive performance....

I like straight forward hdtach....I am not sure on test that do raid system testing well though....

Moral being...don't put too much stock in sissoft sandra results ever...and pcmark is relatively new and is likely doing something incorrectly....maybe be fixed tomorrow...
