I have a 20 gig maxtor 7200 rpm drive.
I was thinking of doing a fresh install of winxp.
Right now I have the drive partitioned into a 4 gig portion and a 16 gig portion.

Was thinking about just bringing it all back to one 20 gig portion. Any opinions on the pros/cons of this idea?

There's realy no point to Partitions, unless your making a separate one for Linux. If u use it mp3's and stuff, u can never guess how much space u'll need, and once u partition it, u can't change it without thw risk of losing ur data.

So i would go with just a 20Gigger Partition, good luck!

I like putting my MP3's and important stuff on a seperate partition so incase I need to do a fresh install I don't have to wory about backing it up.

That's what I do, keep all my data on seperate partitions so that I can keep better tabs on what I've got and so when I need to reinstall Windows I can format C: and go with minimal fuss.

Thats what CD-RW's are for

That would work for lots of people I suppose. I have over 60GB of MP3s that don't lend themselves to easy or economical backup onto CD-Rs...

[EDIT] Oh yeah, I wouldn't really bother with a 20GB hard drive, unless it's your only drive I guess. I use a 20GB partition for my OS, except on my server, only about 6GB.[/EDIT]

An OS only partition also makes it much easier to do backups using programs like Ghost or Drive Image. You can usually put your your OS part on 1-2 cdr/w's. Faster defragging too among other things. Your Data partition shouldn't need much defragging since your data doesn't move around much. Besides, defragging 700-800 meg files can be very slow and not much fun. That's why I partition and any person with half a brain should too. Just kidding!
