My comp just went down, i did a massive unrar (3+ gigs) session yesterday and it must have killed it because now when i boot up, it tells me no os is installed. it was giving me problems before, slow hangups and weird rattling, clicking noises. i think the hard drive is dead and now i am in a need of a hard drive.

im planning on running to j&r later on and getting this:

MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 9 - 160GB U133 $99.99
Is this a quality hard drive and is it overpriced?

I know this may not be the best deal in town but i need to get it back up fast and ordering online will take at least 2 days plus sunday is coming up so ill probably have to wait for monday before i get it.

When you need something fast, you usually have to throw "good price" out the window.

It's a fine drive. I've not had any unusual problems with Maxtors. I've had them die, but then again, I've had every brand of them die at some point.

You could get the absolute cheapest drive from a store. Then get online and purchase whatever you like for a reasonable price.

Keep the cheap little drive around for emergencies.

Now that I have a 120GB(system) and two 250GB(storage) drives, my 40GB and 60GB have basic windows installs on them to facilitate troubleshooting.

Wow, two threads on the 1st page about dead drives. Oh well, now you know why I only buy SCSI drives with the Adaptec controller.

Hmm personally i would get the Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB or 160GB. I have the SATA 120gb and it is dead quiet... seeks are KIND OF loud but the drive is extremely fast. Also still has a 3yr waranty... best in the buisness.
