Whats wrong:
I can't open up my "my music folder."
I'm using vista 32 home premium on a sony laptop that I just bought last year.
I can browse through the folders and files through foobar, and mp3 doctor and other programs, but I can't open the folder through home-> music.
It will think for a LONG time, and will say that the program is not responding and ask to restart or close the program.
But I can put things into the folder.

What can I do to fix it or get all my music files elsewhere?
I only have this harddrive on this computer, and no external HD.
 
If you have a Vista install disk then pop it into your drive and perfrom a repair install. This will find and fix any minor issues like this for you.
 
My computer didn't come with one, is there an easier way? I can download it though but I have slow internet so I'd rather not. (I have MSDN through my school and it's legal)
on a sidenote I used chkdsk, but it didn't find any errors.
 
Sounds like you might have a file that's causing the issue. Vista and XP bother parse the contents of a folder when you open to display its information, such as album, author, genre, ect. Try browsing the folder in Safe Mode. If Safe Mode works, some file in the directory of your music folder is attempting to open and is causing the hangup. The programs won't do this because the programs don't have to parse to explore the directory.
 
I went into safe mode, and I could browse through the folder, so how do I find which file is attempting to open and delete it or fix it or something?

That i'm not sure of. How many files are in there?
 
You got me there man..you really do..you don't have them in any folders? You don't have to worry about what's in folders, it's only the ones out loose.
 
Well then I only have about 500, but wow. I guess I can go into safe mode and organize them into folders.
 
One test is to drag all them into a folder, reboot to normal mode, and try to open the folder. If it opens that confirms one of those songs is f'in u up.
 
OK - get an external drive - copy all of your music into folders (mine are by album/artist, etc. Once you have all of your music on your external drive (it then becomes portable!) you can delete the entire "My Music" folder and rebuild it. I know you don't presently have an external drive, but get one.

If you have space on your present HDD, you can create a new Music folder (leave off the silly "My") and copy all your files into it. Then create new links to the new folder. If they work, then you can delete the old folder.

I suspect that there is nothing wrong with the folder or the contents, but that the Windows links to it are damaged. That can be repaired.
