What are the different hard drive interfaces?
How to check whether existing interface is compatible with a new hard drive?
What are the speed issues?
Are different interface inter-compatible?

I see different types of interfaces, such as Ultra ATA which has different speeds, from 100 to 133, and ATA interfaces and SATA interfaces, and different versions of SCSI interfaces.

Can someone give me a breakdown and also answer the above questions??
 
Why not tell us what you're trying to accomplish?

For general learning, the main AT website has articles and FAQs on IDE, SATA and SCSI, as does StorageReview.com
 
i still dont understand, how do i check on my motherboard what type of interface i have and whats compatible? and how do i check if the following is compatible with my system?

I'd check the manual or spec sheet for the motherboard. Pretty much any non-server motherboard made in the last 5-10 years is going to use ATA hard drives, and all the speed grades are backwards compatible.

Bottom line:
SCSI is better than IDE but cost a lot more and most people won't really benefit anyway.

There are many grades of SCSI that have been made over the years. The faster ones are better.

There are many grades of IDE that have been made over the years. The faster ones are better.

IDE is moving to Serial ATA now. Serial ATA is better and will eventually displace IDE but not for a while.
