Hard drive formatting help

Ok, I have two "old" HDD's that I have taken everything that I want to keep off of and have formatted them (right click ------> Format).


Now what? I know I'm forgetting something, but I can not for the life of me remember.


And I am NOT putting an OS on these...they are slave HDD's.

I'm going to be putting them in a new computer, but I would like to have them "ready" and just plug and play. They are both going to be just "normal" secondary HDD's on the new computer.


Don't I have to partition them? If so, how?
 
That should be it if you're not booting to them & used the correct file system unless you want to partition them.

I tried to open my "F:" drive (the nowly formatted one) and it said "F: Unaccessable"

So I'm assuming that I HAVE to partition it.


How does one do that exactly? I know this is a kindergaten question, but for the life of me, I can not remember how to do it.

Alright...apparently, I'm an idiot.


heh...it wasn't quite done formatting, hence the unaccessable part. Now I can access it.


So, now, why would I want to partition it? What are the advantages/disadvantages?

OK, I'll try. Say that 80g drive is F:, you could cut it in half & make 2 40g partitions that the OS would show as drives F:, & G: I use Western Digitals Data Lifeguard CD but I think you can do it with the XP install disk as well

Ahhhh ok. Gotcha.


Me thinks no need then. That being said, I could always just make/name folders (ie. Program Files) and use it like a master HDD then, right?
 
Partitioning is good if you want to set different logical drive fro differant purposes. On my promary desktop I have a second drive partioned into one drive for data and one drive that is shared accross the lan.

Hi, If the drive is working and you don't need it to boot all you need from Windoze is FORMAT without System Files. Quick format is OK for a working drive if you just want to clean it. Jim
