hard drive failure?

I have a 60 gig maxtor (7200rpm) divided into 2 partitions. But I recently had my D: give me some "time out" message when I tried to go into a folder. Then I restarted...and now I cant see that 40 gig partition. My other 20 gig partition is still here.

Use the powerMAX software to diagnosys. Or call a maxtor customer service.

Ok, so now I find out that it keeps disconnecting itself. I got my partition back after I unplugged the cable and put it back in. But now I just got one of those "unsafe removal" messages from win2k.
