hard drive dying?

i have two hard drive and both of them IBM deskstar. anyway, when i connect both hard drive, comp will not recognize one of the drive, let's name it drive 1. if i just connect drive 1 alone, comp will recognize it but then it will give message that comp have failure reading the drive and thus i have to restart. even after restart, same thing happened. sometimes, comp are able to recognize both drive. however, comp will stuck at the window start up screen. it is only that i remove drive 1 will window boot up properly. i'm using win2k btw. so my question is my hard drive 1 dying? is there anyway to fix this?? i have stuff in that drive that's important to me.

Are they both connected to one IDE cable? If so check your jumpers, if HD#2(bootdrive) is set to master then HD#1 should be set to Slave.

i have additional cdrw drive and dvd drive. so both my harddrive are set as master while the cdrw and dvd drive are set as slave. therefore each harddrive in separate ide slot. is this kind of set up ok? or should i make one of the harddrive a master and the other slave and both on one ide slot?

It's not wrong to have hard drive and cd-rom drivers sharing an IDE channel but the preferred method is to have 2 Hard drives on the primary channel and the 2 cd-rom drives on the secondary channel.

Can't see that would cause these kind of problems though...is S.M.A.R.T Capability enabled in the bios? When you go into the bios and try and force an autodetect does it do this quickly or does it take a while or even hang?

s.m.a.r.t capability is disabled. at first when i boot up the comp, it says :" auto detecting drive, press esc to cancel." if this message comes up, usually it's undetected result. however now the comp recognize both drive easily and no hang of sort. it's only until in the window2k start up screen that it sort of took a long time to enter window. i didn't wait for it to enter the window cos i know there's problem with it.
