What brand drive should I get? I'm looking for a 160 or 200GB drive. I've heard so many different things on brands and was just wondering what kind of experiences other people have had. Quiet, affordable and reliable are my main criteria. Right now, I'm leaning towards a WD or Seagate.
 
Ditto. Western Digital has only one decent line, and those are the Raptors. If you got SATA RAID and some cash, a striped set of Raptors is nice and would be ~140gb, but all else, go seagate.

If your really rich, M-System drives are the fastest in the world, but one with the capacity you need will run you a hundred eighty thousand.
 
Seagate's got a 5-year warranty. Samsung's FDB drives are VERY quiet, and very cheap. WD -- tends to be more expensive and noisier (although they have a new line of drives looking very promising, but they're so new that I actually have no idea how they perform). Reliability tends to be very good for all the major brands.
 
I've used mainly WD hard drives for my builds with a few Seagates as well. Never had a problem with any of them, I even dropped a Seagate HDD onto a concrete path (It was still in it's packaging) and that one is still going fine. I'd tend to go with a Seagate though now with their longer warranty and they are quiet too.
 
Yeah, I remember when most HDDs had 5-year, they dropped down to 3-year, and than brought back 5-years like it was something new.
 
cant go wrong with either seagate or western digital i have both in my computer a 74 raptor, 160 seagate, and 160 raptor. the only sound i hear comes from my raptor
 
Trying to pick HDD based on how much noise it makes is like Green PC missing the boat on CRTs way back in the 90s. To really cut down on noise get vapor-phase and/or water cooling. Asetek's Waterchill HDD waterblocks are really nice.

(For those who don't understand the green pc comment, when people first started worrying about how much power consumption a pc had, it was laughable when they generally consume less than 50w idle [back then], but a big CRT can easily hit 600w)
 
BTW, whats a 160 Raptor? They come in 36gb and 74gb. and two 74gb raid 0 after ntfs format equals 140gb......
 
I just bought 2 seagates for my new box, and they are very quiet and perform very well. They also have the 5 year warranty.
