Yep this IBM replacement drive is finally kicken the bucket... pretty pathetic considering i have awsome cooling on this thing.. case temp is 19 degrees celcius .... hard drive cool as ice .... my 75GXP died and got the 60GXP as a replacement ... well that is dieing ... all within a year about ... pretty freakin sad!

I'm not sure what to buy for a repacement ... i'd like a 60+ GB hard drive andsomething fast and quiet .. and no IBM's please 2 drives within a year is pathetic ... hard drives fails but this drive actually failed just by being there...

ok anyway .. and recomendations? thanks!

Recommend backing that sucker up fast and then getting a different drive. Try the WD 100 or 120Gig drives or maybe a Maxtor d740 drive. Good luck.

<< lol ... no one shoud buy a IBM drive ... >>

There are millions of satisfied IBM owners, and I am one of them. I rarely have hardware fail, and I am sorry to see the unfortunate few that seem to suffer. I often wonder if some people simply make up the 75GXP/60GXP failure posts to draw attention and flame fests upon themselves.

I have had more Maxtors go bad than I would have liked, but my old 75GXP is still working fine. I think that anyone can find a bad drive.. hehe but if you've had a couple go bad and you are getting fed up, get a different drive. I might try a new 120GXP out cause they look like nice drives but I am not going to neglect Maxtor either cause of the problems that I've had in the past from their drives.

Don't boycott the company cause of some drives going bad, just do a bit of research and choose a new drive based off of that. You will be getting another IBM drive cause that 60GXP is still under warranty but you will have the option of keeping it or selling it and buying a different brand. That choice is up to you.

Gotta go with John on this one. It is a known fact the 45GB 75GXP's had problems and a high failure rate, but ever since that big fiasco it seems any time any IBM drive has problems it gets lumped in with the 45GB 75GXP failures. All company's hardrive will fail at some time or the other. Dead HD's are not something that only IBM encounters. It seems though that everytime a IBM GXP series drive has a problem, people start threads like "Another IBM bites the dust" or the like. It's like a self perpetuating thing around here.

I have two IBM 75GXP 30GB drives and two 40GB 60GXP drives that have been going strong for awhile in tough conditions. All my system are overclocked, and all of my IBM's are run @ 37mhz+ PCI speeds. My 75GXP's have been through several upgrades and are still going strong after almost two full years, and my 60GXP's have been great for almost a year now. I have also built several customer builds exclusively with IBM 60GXP drives and I have not had one come back with problems. So, I'm inclined to stick with IBM unless I have some personal experience that makes me decide otherwise.

The point is that there are also many satisifed IBM drive owners just like John said. Sure, if I had two straight drives from IBM die on me, I might try something else, but your two drives are nothing compared to the amount of drives IBM ships a year. Also, they supply tons of office PC's to companies with these drives, and if they were so problematic, there would be a big backlash.

My .02. :)

you got some paranoia issues ...

why would i waste my time to make up a post that has little meaning to anyone or meaning within itself? Not to mention waste what little time i do have. work and school work and school work .... you get the idea ....

i'm no it's dead officially ... windows xp freezes up and the computer is super slow ... i have a xp 1600+ and it isn't anything but the hard drive .... it's simple logic really ...

I often wonder if some people simply make up the 75GXP/60GXP failure posts to draw attention and flame fests upon themselves.

Seeing as how the increased failure rate is documented and largly accepted, I don't think that's the case.

As to reccomendations, I really like the offerings from Western Digital (if you have the money, try the WD1000JB), Maxtor, and Seagate - the Seagate is extremely quiet if you like that sort of thing. The IBM 120GXP also looks like a very good drive, and in all honesty it may exhibit none of the traits that the 75 and 60 series have shown - only time will tell.
If reliability is your main focus, I wouldn't ask for drive reccomendations, since almost all drives out there (with the exception of a few like the IBM's) exhibit about the same rate of failure from my understanding - I would either do constant backups to something fairly safe (CDR, DVD, whatever) or set up a RAID 1. If you're really anal, do both.

I'd get a new Maxtor D740... they are fast and SILENT.. very very quiet, reliable drives.
I build all my systems with these since the drive came out and no problems with any thus far... they rock!

so many choices .. what do you guys think about the "WD WESTERN DIGITAL EIDE HARD DRIVE 80GB 7200RPM MODEL # WD800BB " it's 137 ... i can't justify the extra 75 bucks for an extra 20 gigs ... referring to the 100GB special edition.
