Maxtor drives are manaufactured with tiny little time bombs that cause the drives to fail a couple of months after their 12 month warranty expires. Although their tech support wouldn't confirm this, they also said they wouldn't deny it either. You choose: A Maxtor that will probably fail after their 12 month warranty or go with a Seagate and a 5 year warranty. Not a very difficult decision to make!

I have had bad experiences with Maxtor too. Very good experience with Seagate. If Seagate is still confident enough in its drives to offer a 5 year warranty, that is a pretty loud and clear indicationto me of where I would find the better quality. HD failure is too much of a pain to prompt me to buy on price alone.

yeah, its not worth the hassle of going cheap and buying a maxtor. when obviously they can't compare with seagate

haven't had problems with maxtors myself, in fact I have computers from 1995 still going off their maxtor hd! Lucky I guess.

western digital sucks for me thou.

I bought one of the Hitachi 80GB today. It is a 2MB cache drive, meaning it won't be too fast. I just hope it isnt too loud and it lasts a while, as its going in a machine with a PSU fan and nothing else making noise... (replacing a replacement for a WD 80GB SE drive)

The WD 160GB from Best Buy is hotter when you use the $20 off coupon available here. Then it becomes only $20 + tax AR. The coupon is on Best Buy's site so should be OK to post here.
