I just can't stand my Seagate 750GB 7200.10 hard drive anymore. It's way too loud (I ordered very quiet parts for my rig, including a Fanless Saphire HD3850 videocard).

The 7200.10's seem to be hit or miss by some people, some claim they are very very quiet, others say they are loud.

The drive is by far the loudest item in the case, and thanks to Windows Vista, it's constantly being accessed, even with SuperFetch, Indexing, etc disabled.

So, I'm going to make it a data only drive and just bought myself a SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB 7200 RPM drive from NewEgg.

The thing is, I don't want to have to re-install everything.

My Seagate drive has 2 partitions:

Partition1: OS + Installs 199GB (100GB in use)
Partition2: Data Only: 498 GB (240GB in use)

What would be my best option to clone the data on Partition1 to the new Samsung and have it be bootable? I ordered an OEM drive so I won't have any software come with my Samsung. My biggest concern is I'll be cloning data from a 750GB drive to a 500GB drive (even though I am not using 500GB on the Seagate)

Thanks for the help!

whats your case?
a decent case like an antec sonata/p182 type should make most drives pretty quiet these days.

I have a dirt cheap CoolMaster case.

I know what you are gonna say, replace the case and the problem will go away, but trust me, this sucker is so loud there is no way. It may get dampened some, but a loud seek is a loud seek.

It's near dead silent when there are no seeks, but sadly with Vista that seems to be only when the computer is off! :)

It works under UBCD's boot which is independent of Vista. A good cloner does not care what the content of the HDD is. It makes a bit by bit copy of a drive, and the OS on that drive is not in the equation.

check out this type of HD mounting solution on the lancool (lian li OEM) K10 which renders hard drives completely silent (at least to my ears)

I agree a better case would help, but this drive I have is really loud. A new case won't drown out the seeks, I'm sure of it.

This is the case I have:

Got it for $35 after rebate and free shipping.

I hear that the larger 7200.10 drives are louder than the smaller ones. I also have heard that different batches are worse than others.

Again, I'm not arguing that a case won't dampen the drive noise, but it's just so freaking loud there is no way I'd be satisfied unless it was encased in a sound proof vacuum.

Acronis TrueImage 10 has been great for me, but I read a lot of complaints about TrueImage 11.

Terabyte 'Image for Windows' and 'Image for DOS' are both very reliable disk image and recovery programs.

I quit using anything with a Norton or Symantec label on it some years ago.

Hope this helps!

Which program did you end up using?

Pretty much every cloning app can do partition to partion cloning so pick your poison, I'd say ghost is most popular.

Acronis TrueImage 11, Recover CD. Worked very nicely. I selected this because after doing some research I saw it had all kinds of praise. I'm sure the Ultimate Boot CD would have worked too.

Acronis True Image is miles better than Norton Ghost, and I've used Ghost many years before I discovered ATI. With ATI, you can clone a fresh install on 1 DVD and that 1 DVD is all you'll need.
