Hard drive constantly working for games/movies

Alright, I'm not sure if this is a big problem or not, but more of an annoyance. Anyways, whenever I run a game, or a movie, I can hear my hds working. You know, the little "ticking" noises? The problem is that it's nonstop until a couple of minutes after I stop playing the game or watch the movie. The noise just sort of bothers me. Is this normal? My last system never did this.

Edit: Ricemarine cleared up a little for me, thought it was cpu at first.

CPU's tick?

I always thought they were the hard drives that made the noise since hard drives actually have moving parts

(I'm either joking or not joking... YOU DECIDE  )

I guess that makes sense. For some reason I was thinking of a different sound for HD, maybe cd-rom. Anyways, why would it be constant? I can understand being loud when it's loading the data, but mine is nonstop. Doesn't sound healthy. When I'm idle in windows, it's fine, and very quiet.

well you mention its not constant. It would be helpful if you list your computer specs.

and rice is correct, its your hard drive. I bet money its NOT a seagate.

Specs:

core 2 duo e6600
wd 250gb sata 3.0 gb/sec
maxtor 200gb ide
asus p5b deluxe/wifi-ap
corsair xms2 2GB ddr800
evga geforce 7950gt

windows xp pro SP2

Does it have something to do with my SATA and IDE combo? Do I need to install any drivers for either or do I have to do something with RAID? I read that even if you don't want to have a raid setup, you still need to install raid drivers for sata. Any light you can shed would be appreciated.

It's very faint. I barely notice it, but I do. I can just barely hear it through my headphones. It's not the sound level that bothers me, it's just the duration.

bump

Anything I can do beyond replacing it or not using it?

An example is when I load World of Warcraft. The hard drive starts working. Fine. That's expected. However it continues to work making the "tick" noises the entire duration that I am playing. Previously after loading it would quiet down. Just really bothers me.

It might be a driver issue. Try getting the newest software from the manufacturer's site.
You can rule out the IDE / SATA combo as the culprit.

Sounds like maxtor seek noises.

While you're gaming the HD will be being used continuously, the same with watching a film stored on your hard drive. I can hear my HDs clicking happily away at the moment (and they are quiet drives chosen especially for their low noise tendancies and suspension mounted). Could it be that you're just noticing it now?

If you're worried then download an application with SMART monitoring. It'll tell you if your HD is starting to reach the end of it's lifespan. (Speedfan will do the job, as will others no doubt).

It could be that I am just noticing now...I did switch from a Shuttle case to a mid-tower.

I didn't install any drivers for either of my HDs. Should I have?

Something to note is that when hardware acceleration is turned off on my video card, movies play without the noise. Any correlation?

not that i can think of buy who knows. have you dont the tests from the manf disk yet? since you just switched to a shuttle, is it sitting on your desk and now you notice it more?

tonight when i was gaming i checked my hdd light periodically and it would blink, but not in any certain repitition it was more sporadic, and i didn't exceed my ram. maybe you have some software that is writing to a log file every 2sec?

The new case is sitting in the same place as my old shuttle. It's a fresh windows install so I doubt there is a software issue.

What diagnostic program can I run? Some of you mentioned running something and the ones I looked at were information loverload and I didn't know what to look for.

usually the hdd manf has a disc or program that can run diagnostics for you, check out wd and maxtor (they are usually brand dependent so you will probably need one for the maxtor and a different one for the wd)
