Hard Drive Concerns

Actual HDD Name:
WDC WD5001AALS-00L3B2

500GB STA Drive (465BG actual)

I ran PCMark05 and I was floored by the results. I have noticed though that XP Bootup and shutdown times have been surprisingly high. Not anywhere I had expected. Access times seem high and raw throughput low...

PCMark rated:
HDD - XP Startup 10.83MB/sec
HDD - General Usage 8.37MB/sec
File Compression: 6.64MB/sec (which actually seems to be on-part per system specs)
File Encryption 34.28MB/sec (same as above)
HDD - Virus Scan 61.43MB/sec

The top two figures have the most concern. There weren't enough comparable systems in ORB to determine a comparison but I know these are low numbers and I've felt that this build doesn't have the punch I thought it would. Keep in mind, I do understand that this build is far from the top-of-the-line HPCs but it shouldn't be no slouch either. I am running HL2 at HD res at 150+ fps (max detail).

Anyhow, please send some replies and let me know what you think. Thanks.

Doesn't look that bad but I haven't run that benchmark for long so I could be wrong. What's the aggregate score for the HDD?

Pulled up the spec sheet for this drive and model from WDC.com and apparently their data shows a sustained rate of 113MB/sec.

HD Tune 2.55:
(Benchmark settings at default, 4/5 Accurate, 64KB Block Size)
Min 44.6
Max 122.3
Avg 95.6

Access Time 12.4ms
Burst 127.2
CPU Usage 4.1

Also, wanted to verify this to be accurate as well; this was displayed withing Gigabytes DMI Viewer as well. Supported and Active Standard for the HDD is Mode 6.

Those are in the ballpark of my Hitachi 1 TB drives on an Intel ICH7 controller.

360 - 16 MB cache, 3 platters
Burst - 155 MB/sec
Max. - 117 MB/sec
Min - 55 MB/sec
Average - 89 MB/sec
Access time: 13.2 ms

330 - 32 MB cache, 5 platters
Burst - 140 MB/sec
Max. - 83 MB/sec
Min - 42 MB/sec
Average - 69 MB/sec
Access time: 12.9 ms
