Hard drive clone?

OK, I have a laptop set-up wonderfully to my liking and now I am in the process of getting a new laptop. I want to transfer everything to my new laptop - including all of my settings and appearance files - but I really don't know how this is possible. I'd prefer to not use a floppy disk to initiate the sequence and I would like to be able to do it via a remote HDD (connected via USB) or with a CD-R / DVD-R.

Is this possible?

If you feel like investing in cloning software, I like Acronis' TrueImage software. If you're going to do a USB hookup, make sure to get USB 2.0, or else it'll take a LONG time. I did a laptop cloning recently - copying 19GB of data over USB 2.0 took about 1.5hrs. By USB 1.1, the estimate was 14hrs. I didn't let it do the USB 1.1 transfer, and instead removed the drive from the laptop and cloned it using another adapter.
