it would be nice if the list of results original post would be separated into RAID0 and single drives... rather then having the two mixed in together...

Very interesting results thus far... I see that the WD 640GB drive and the Seagate 1TB 7200.11 are almost the same, and by far the fastest drives tested here... faster then the raptors...

Ok, here's my two drives from WD and Maxtor. I didn't turn the indexing off as I didn't know what that option was in the properties of the drives as I don't have the english version.

Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB WD1600AAJS, 8MB cache, 7200RPM (OS Drive)
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5875/wdii2.jpg

The average was rather low this time, I've scored over 62MB/s with this drive previously but it didn't want to play nice this time. The access time is horrible and I don't know why, it's always above 20ms with this drive.

Maxtor 120GB 6Y120P0, 2MB cache, 7200RPM
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/2785/maxtorxa7.jpg

An old drive with 51443 hours under its belt. Used to be the OS drive in my previous system.

How old is your U3? It's a LOT faster than my 4GB. I just tested a brand new 8GB and it's much faster than the 4GB!

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/C6FT7/8gu3.gif

Perhaps this test could be used to determine how good the drive would be for readyboost? I know which one I'd rather have for RB tasks! ;)

The write performance of flash can be much slower than the read, so the typical HDTune/HDTach should be augmented with something else for that.

E.g. A-DATA 4 GB "266x" in a UDMA-capable CF-IDE adapter:

Not too sure how new it is. My father gave it to me because it came installed with programs that can run from it. He didn't know how to remove those since he just wanted it for storage.

I did show him how to remove them, but he still let me keep it :)

Model number is SDCZ6-2048RB

Did you try changing the drive policy for your readyboost drive? Could make it a little faster if it's optimized for performance rather than removability.

WinXP 32bit
ASUS P5K-E + Celeron 420 + 4GB G.skill PQ series 1000mhz @ 800mhz

Samsung T166 320GB: http://img294.imageshack.us/im...nchmarksamsunghhg9.png
It's 10 celsius cooler than my other drives. Feels cool to touch.. cooler than my Xigmatek /w Celeron. Very quiet when idle. When it's reading, the noise is audible and sounds average.

Western Digital 500GB Caviar SE16: http://img398.imageshack.us/im...nchmarkwdcwd500wz5.png
As hot as a typical hard drive. Idle noise is louder than with Samsung, but it's not too bad. When it's writing, the noise doesn't change much at all. Only random seek made it to make some kind of noise.

Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 4GB USB stick: http://img181.imageshack.us/im...nchmarkkingstonge8.png
The cheapest 4GB USB stick I could find. Cheaper than most 2GB sticks at the time of purchase. Slightly hotter than the Samsung drive when utilized fully? Or then it just conducts better.

Some more WDC640 benchmarks under different circumstances:

Here's a pair set up as a mirror (RAID1) on Areca 1680 SAS host:

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/C6FT7/wd640_1680.gif

Here we have one sitting in a USB2 dock. (Thermaltake BlacX)

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/C6FT7/wd640usb.gif

And for laughs - the Hitachi 60GB 7200 rpm in my Fujitsu Lifebook:

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/C6FT7/hgs7200-flp.gif

All kidding aside that notebook for having just 512MB ram and a single core (solo) cpu is very snappy. The original HDD was a HGST 60GB 5400 RPM part and it died so I swapped it with a 7200 part and the performance increase was definitely noticeable. Still get ~4 hours battery life. Not bad for a battery made in the fall of 2004! :Q

Thanks Husky55. I was tired of searching the web for specific information on hard drives for my latest build, hence I felt the need for this type of thread. I need to update the chart this weekend as we have a new winner, Samsung F1 1TB Drive...looks sweet!

Using my 1st gen Raptor with azureus prime95 running in the background:
HD Tune 2.55

wonder if I should just dump this crap and replace it with a cheap seagate 7200.10 500GB

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
4GB PC6400
E8400 @ 3.6ghz
Vista-64

btw, these results are massively similar to Tom's Hardware HDD charts, might as well just read up on that

EDIT: I made a 2nd try after turning off azureus and prime95 and got these results
What made me wonder is that both results have the same 2 sharp dips in transfer rates towards the end. Does this mean some kind of bad sector on my HD?

Any ideas?

Should I RMA this drive?

I don't think there is anything wrong with your drive. Those minimal differences are proof that there is a difference between the nVidia Controllers and Intels.

You got rid of our graph with our own results? :(

I liked that...it's great that Tom's reviews stuff n all, but i was appreciating having our own little resource.
