Anyone know any free tools that will do decent Hard drive benchmarking.

i want to compare my current raid 5 to a new raid 5 i jsut build with different drives.

ideas ?

Hd Tach is what I prefer, but I've read it can crap out on very large arrays (as in TB's). However, I've never experienced this myself. Hd Tach

I think Everest also has a hard drive bench mark.

Thanks... my results ok for sata raid 5?

Random access: 13 ms
CPU 6%
Avg read: 171 MB/s

seems that peak read was 182MB.s

BTW worked on my 1.2TB array

The typical challenge with RAID 5 is writing, not reading, so read-only benchmarks like HDTach, while interesting, don't give you a good idea of how good your RAID 5 implementation is.

You could try iometer. Here's one test configuration write-up:

I'd go with an even bigger test file (10x bigger), because some our machines have much more than 1 GiB available RAM, and probably stick with 64K accesses because that's more common AFAIK in the Windows world at least.
