Hard drive benches? Not so good, 40gb Barracuda in XP

Both drives are on DMA mode 5 acc'd to the system properties in XP, at times they feel sluggish though, any ideas? The score seem a bit low.

1800+ XP
512MB @ 144fsb.

Both drvies are identical 40GB seagate barracudas, C is NTFS, D is FAT32.

Well seems right. Try running them in RAID 0. I don't trust HDD benchs. I take their readings with a grain of salt. 😛

What software you used to get those numbers? Why don't you try a test like HDTach 2.61? It works under WinXP, but you need to register it. It's better because it performs low level tests

I too have a 40 GB barracuda IV. Here's my benches (if you want a comparison)

HDD: Primary Slave. )Windows cache enabled)

Buffered Read: 60 MB/s
Sequential Read: 41 MB/s
Random Read: 11 MB/s
Buffered Write: 29 MB/s
Sequential Write: 21 MB/s
Random Write: 14 MB/s
Average Access Time: 4 ms (estimated)
Index: 27161

IMO, your sequential read is very low for the barracuda. The barracuda has a beginning read of over 40MBps and an end read of at least 24MBps. Your value of 19 is definitely low. Since I've enabled Windows cache, my write burst and avg access speeds are inaccurate.
