Hard Disks with Fans fail less than the ones without ?

not a whole lot, unless you have a high rpm hd that runs very hot, and airflow in ur case is poor, you probably wont need it, .. if you do use them , use a fanbus ..

Since my last IBM drive died (possibly of overheating), I think any hard drives drive operating over 7200RPM and especially SCSI drives should really have active cooling (i.e. bay coolers)

Unless the cooling in your case is terrible I really cannot see a reason to get a hard drive cooler, otherwise they would sell them with them. I do agree that if you have less then effective case cooling or have a particular hard drive that tends to run hot then they do have a use. I have never needed to use them on any of my 7200 rpm drives though and never had any problems with them for years now.

The chips that drive the motor and move the heads can run very hot - I've measured some at over 70C in 23C ambient air, and I've heard many drives make head knocking sounds just before they failed, possibly because of an overheated chip. But even the tiniest amout of air flow, even convection from vertical mounting, can drop the temperature 10-20C.

You can buy a HDD Cooler now for less than $10.00 and install it or you can wait until you have a knocking HDD which cost about 10x more.

LOL!! that reminded me of that old fram oil filter commercial. "you can pay us now or pay us later" 😉
Starting to sound like an auto repair help forum around here.😛

yeah I think active cooling on some drives is necessary..
I've got a couple Fujitsu drives in this PC and they are currently running hot to the touch... I think if i really wanted to make sure they would last I'd get some cooling in there.. they are hot enough you couldn't leave your hand on them for very long!

my drives at home in my Antec case have an hdd cooler, and they feel totally room temperature... much better than the heat of these babies here...

Depends on variables such as your case, its ventillaton, your particular drive(s), ambient temp, etc.

A drive cooler usually isn't necessary these days, but they certainly don't hurt. Everybody knows heat kills electronics.

Whether you should spend for one depends on your particular variables and how much you value your data.

I think of it as an insurance policy: hopefully I'll never need it .. but if I do ..

For me, tt's worth a few bucks to help preclude the headaches of a dead drive.

I have 5 of those IBM 75GXPs (45GB) .. the ones that are failing on everybody.

Had mine over a year now .. haven't had a single one fail (knock on wood).

Me too. Several IBMs with case cooling fans mounted just in front. Antec 1030 cases.
