will the x ray machines or metal dectctors damage my disk?

please note that i am carrying just the hard disk not a laptop....

I would say it is highly unlikely to cause any problem at all.

The very fact that thousands of laptop users never suffer any problem with the data on thier disks is probably testament to it being safe.

As always though anything that it really important should be backed up anyway.

If its packaged for instant review, no problem.

I carry my pocket USB harddrive around with me and I've never had a problem.

XRays have no effect on magnetic media. The only problem could be if the equipment is out of adjustment and there is excessive EMR present. But, that is not likely these days. TSA keeps these things in pretty good working order. It doesn't make any difference if the HDD is out of or in a laptop. The effect is the same. Your greatest danger is dropping it on the floor.
