Hard Disk Not Found! PLeas Help!

Ok here is some info. I just built this pc in the begining of this year jan 2005. I have a Amd 64 3000+, Asus K8v Se Deluxe Mobo, 1gb ram, Ati 9800pro Flashed to 9800xt, the hard drive is a Maxtor 200gb (6B200P0). I have winxp pro installed. Recently i just flashed my bios to ver.1007 using the Asus Update. There were no problems except my mouse and raid driver had to be reinstalled. The Main problem was that every time i SHUTDOWN my computer and booted back up it would beep once and say "Hard Disk Not Found" press F1 to Continue. To fix this I have to shutdown, then i turn off the switch on the back of the case for the power supply which takes out all the power. ( I believe that resets the Cmos) Then wait around 30 secs turn the switch back on and power up. It would boot back up and run fine. This only happens when i shutdown my pc over night. In the past 8 months this has happend to me around 4 times. 3 out of the 4 i reformatted. The 4th got fixed... because i installed my floopy drive wrong. The cable to the floopy drive was hooked upside down. ( I believe this is what was causing it the 4th time) So after that 4th time it has been running perfect. Then about 3-5 days ago i flashed the bios and this is when it started happpening again. Can SOMEONE please help me with this. Any advise or input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Orlando

What you did does not reset the CMOS by the way, as those settings are kept saved by a little battery on the motherboard. After Flashing the BIOS of any motherboard, I suggest that you go into the BIOS and reset it back to Factory Defaults, most manufacturers suggest this as well.

Have you tried a different IDE cable and a different power cable for the hard drive? These could both cause intermittent problems

Also... quit flashing the BIOS. If you don't *need* to, don't. And by *need* to, I mean to fix some compatibility issue you're having - which isn't usually the case.

Well i just booted up today and it worked Fine. Im going to keep trying and see if its stable. Btw when i turn the switch in the back off what does that acutally do then?? Becuase when I do that and turn it back on it works fine. WHen i Flashed the bios i did take out the little battery around the 4th reboot or so. I also forgot to mention that when i do my little trick to get it to work the only thing i got instead of the "No Hard disk Found" is OverClocking Failed, Press F1 to go to Bios or F2 to load setup defaults (something like that). Which is werid becuase I dont have my Cpu Overclocked. So i dont know why it says that.

Flipping the switch on the back cuts power to the machine completely (except the battery for the bios). Taking out the little battery is generally not a good thing... at best it'll just reset your BIOS to it's defaults (which you can do within the BIOS), at worst it won't reset much of anything other than your system clock, or apparently freak your BIOS out, given the F1/F2 thing.

Just reset your BIOS defaults from within the BIOS itself, restart and see how it works.

It sounds to me like a flaky USB port or flaky USB support on the motherboard. Is the drive USB 1 or 2? Does it have it's own power adapter and are you using it? Are the USB ports from a card or the motherboard? Have you tried a different port? Perhaps the back of the machine instead of the front, or vice versa?

And once more, for emphasis... quit flashing your BIOS, unless you find you absolutely need to.

What are you talking about USB ports for?? This has to do with a Hard Drive using Ide Cables. I have both Usb 1 and 2 I believe. But what does that have to do with the problem i am having?

Bump, I am still currently having this problem, i have tried changing the ide cables and that hasnt helped. If i were to change my bios to a pervious version would that help? Or perhaps the Jumper cable. Any Suggentions i would greatly appricate it.

Thanks,

well i think i might of found out what the problems was. See my pc is on the Floor in my room. ( My room is carpet, which cause static). So i think that might of been causing this probelm. I placed my case on my table now and everything has been booting up fine.

The case is grounded by the power cord plugged into the power supply. Static electricity to the case should not affect the hard drive.
Please do not reflash the bios again. 🙂 The problem is elsewhere.

Physical Connections
Ensure the cable connectors are firmly placed in the motherboard and in the hard drive.
Ensure the hard drive jumper(s) are properly placed.

Software Based
Ensure the drive is properly recognized by the bios.
Obtain the Maxtor diagnostic utility and test the drive.

Check if the drive is overheating. If it feels very hot, then rig a fan in the case to blow air over the drive for cooling.

Power Supply - hard drives are extremely vulnerable to power variations. I would also recommend a UPS battery backup with undervoltage protection to locally regulate power supplied to your system. Also, read Power Supply 101 for more information.
