Hard Disk noise

I recently bought a Maxtor 120GB 7200rpm DX740 Plus hd, and it works great, but it's got the loud clicking sound when it's reading or writting, my old 30GB maxtor hd didn't do this, but the new big one does! Why? Is what I'm really wondering, and is this normal, anyone have any suggestions on how i could silence it or on a different hd i could get instead? Thanks for any help!

normally the clicking is a symptom of teh drive beginning to fail. so id be carfull and back up all your stuff

my D740 clicks and is very loud when i'm hammering on it. (lots of transferring)
it's been running fine knock on wood.. but it's loud during activity. now my 800JB, that's a quiet mofo.

Well, I just bought it so should i get it exchanged, I have an old 17GB wd drive that just makes that clicking sound normally, as well as my laptop, and those disks have been running problemless for 3 years. I was thinking about possibly, getting a Western Digital drive instead. So do you know if this is a problem with this drive particulary, it's brand new so i wouldnt think it'd be going out on me. Anyways, I found a good deal on the Western Digital 120GB 7200 RPM drive with the 8 MB chache. Anyone know if this would be a silent drive? I've been working forever to silent my computer fans, now i got a nosy hard drive and am certainly not going to keep it.

I recently replaced a Maxtor 740x? drive in a clients' computer because it was so loud. It wasn't running poorly, it just had so many beeps and clicks he wanted it replaced. The WD 80GB (8mb cache) that I put in was silent and they've always been silent.

Well I've lost my faith in maxtor, my old maxtor hd was silent and good, but if they are going to be making noisy hd's to hell with them I think I'll return my hd and get a Western Digital 120GB 7200RPM 8MB cache hd. So that should be quiet right? and obviously from what I've heard it's plenty fast. Thanks for the help!

those WD are meant to be quite decent for quiet, tho if you really want silence then a Seagate barracuda IV is what you want. the WD has best performance, but the 'cuda still good.

Incidentally is your maxtor one of those newish ones with 8mb cache and fluid bearing thingies? Saw them and wondered if they might be good cross of the WD's 8mb cache and 'Cuda's fluid bearing thingys.

No it's a 2mb cahce cheapish one, and loud as a old 1.2 GB seagate drive i've had for 8 years! So the Western Digital, should not be plagued by the clicking of writting and reading right? I dont care about a barly audiable whiling sound of the hd, my fans create that noise anyways, but the clicking sound of when it's writting is just plain annoying! Anyways, th SE version of WD's drives, are there prised top of the line models for IDE, so correct me if im wrong they should be quiet, anyone own one of them and has solid proof?

Thanks,
Mark

I had the same problem as dowfen. I had a the 80GB Fluid version of the Maxtor thinking it would be silent. It ran really well but it was very loud...even compared to my older 30GB 7200RPM Maxtor. The seeking was loud and I would hear clicks and pops here and there. I thought there was something wrong with it so it was replaced with a Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB which is much quieter. I don't notice much speed difference between the two. Maybe the Maxtor was a bit faster but I'd much rather have the silent operation of the Cuda.
