Hard disk making strange noise

from a few days, my harddisk has started making some strange noise, like someone stretched & relesed a string, a sort of whine. It doesn't come always, but sometimes, even the time is not fixed, like today it came after about 2 weeks

I m trying to take a recording of this

I check with HDD Health, & it said the HD is fine, it's an old Samsung 80 GB ATA HD, (SP0812N), however the performance is reduced a little & it's not a placebo

does this sound like my HD is failing, i m using it from past 3 years, almost 4 now, in august 2006

suggestion required, i should start making backups if it is

Well, anytime your hard drive starts making strange noises it?s usually not a good thing. As far as backups go, you should ALWAYS make backups in my opinion. Don?t wait until your hard drive starts making strange noises to do backups, because by that point it may be too late. Do backups on a regular basis. That way, if your HD dies you don?t lose everything.

Have you tried running the Check Disk utility within Windows?

Also, are you sure the noise is coming from the hard drive? Sometimes my CD burner or DVD burner will make a strange, whining noise...but only because they're so old and I think some of the mounting screws might be a little loose.

well. check disk also gives fine results

the thing is, it's a string like whine , don't know how to describe. I m going to make a back tomorrow, about 16 GB in d:\ drive , so 5 DVDs should be enough

Yeh, with that much data I would definitely back it all up...don't put it off any longer. Not sure what the sound means though.

If Check Disk doesn't find anything, there's a really good utility called SpinRite by Steve Gibson that can fix hard drive problems (or at least recover data from damaged drives)...it's about $90 though...
