Hard disk I/O errors

I am having problems with transferring files from my pc to another on the same network. I receive an error message reporting a I/O error with reading the source disk/file. I get this same problem when I try to copy some files from one partition to another on the same hard disk. I am even having problems trying backup files to a CD with Nero reporting that it cannot cache the files due to the same I/O problem.

This has got me worried as I am running out of ways to get my data off the drive! I am guessing that some part of the hard disk is corrupt. Does anyone know what the problem could be, how I can go about fixing it or how I can get the data off the disk?

My spec is a P4 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM, 120 GB Western Digital HDD (I think it is the Caviar SE version) running Windows XP Pro edition.

I think my psu has corrupted some os files on my hdd and this is causing the problem that I am experiencing now. After I got back home this evening, I booted the PC and then immediately started trying to copy files to another machine on my home network. Files moved across with no problem! After about 10/15 mins the file transfer halted and the system crashed. I re-booted the machine, it automatically ran chkdsk, fixed a whole load of files and then booted windows. I tried resuming my file transfer and as soon as it got going, the system abruptly shutdown. I tried re-booting the system and it now will not even boot as it keeps shutting off before it posts.

i think it would be prudent to not try and access the drive while it is connected to this psu - I am thinking that I should get an enclosure or something so that I can hook it up directly to another machine via USB, any thoughts on this?

Try copying files off the drive in another machine if possible.

The drive worked perfectly fine until 10-15 minutes later? Is this reproducible? Perhaps a component in your system is heating up and causing a problem. Check your temperatures and voltages and see if they deviate much from when you first start up.
