Hard disk humm.....

I just got through replacing my northbridge cooler with a Zalman passive hs. I thought the humming sound I was hearing was it.

Well, sadly I was mistaken!

Upon closer inspection I traced the sound to my WD800JB hard disk!
It doesn't make a loud seek noise, it just gives off a constant humm. It's not a low pitch like a vibration noise either. (Main reason I assumed it was the 40mm fan on my Iceberg Copper.)

I checked WD's site and didn't find any acoustic management stuff like you can do with Seagates.

Well an I SOL or have any of you guys found a way to silence a WD.

Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest a different hard drive, since the 800JB uses ball bearings. The ultimate quiet drive, of course, is the Seagate Cheetah 15k.3... on the far end of a 10-meter external SCSI cable, of course. In the realm of ATA, I see the Samsungs being acclaimed as the quietest drives available right now, quieter than the Seagate 7200.7's.

I was actually coming to ask about a quiet drive, and saw this. I have 2x WD80 GBers. They sound like old SCSI drives with the whine they put off. Now that I'm on water I can hear every sound they make, and they're quite annoying.

Yup, $600 in silencing gear and I'm running 2 WD 80GB HDs in Raid 0. I'll replace them... sometime. They are easily the loudest part in my system. I can't tell it's on when it first boots up and spins the fans alone.

Try decoupling them from the case and setting them on foam on the bottom of the case. This should quiet them a great deal. You can also quiet them with elastic suspension. Check out silentpcreview.com

Yeah I saw that there....
I kinda doubt that would help though. I can see how that would stop vibration noise, but I can hear what sounds like the platter spinning. It is a constant whine or high pitch humm. I probably wouldn't notice it, but my computer sits about two feet away from my head on my desktop.

Mine are sitting on sorbothane. It doesn't get any more isolated than that. The problem is the motor in them. That's what's loud.

Well im running the worst drive you guys can think of. Think back 4 or 5 years to the days of 20gb HDD. Yeah a 20gig WD 7200RPM HD. Its slow its ancient and it makes a racquet. if i take it out of my system my system is quiet except for a little bit of air zipping around.
I have heard runors that the 7200.7SATAs are lacking something and are therefore louder than the PATA versions. Can anyone confirm this. Also by how much is this louder. Im looking at the 120gb SATA model.

What mechBgon said. I had a similar drive at one point, they are horribly loud, don't waste time trying to silence it. Seagates and Samsungs are pretty amazing, maxtor is pretty good as well.

Yup that's what I was afraid of.....
Looks like my HTPC is gonna lose about 40GB storage for now. I think I'll yank the Seagate from it and put this 800JB in it's place.

The real shame is...the HD is fast and reliable. (then again anything seems reliable after my DeathStar experience!)

I'll second the Maxtor recommendation. My 80gig is absolutely silent.

I'm surprised that the Samsungs are so good. I have an older one that has the most annoying whine.

I have felt the same about Samsungs sinse I bought 2 of them and they both crapped out after about 6 months. That was a long time ago though....
If the whine gets too annoying in my living room I'll have to buy a new drive.
