Hard disk enclosures. Ugh.

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster.

A quick question dealing with something I know alot has been written about here and there...hoping that I'm just missing something simple.

Anyhow,

I just put together a new system after my old one gave up the ghost. It was a sudden death so I didn't have the time to prepare my data like I normally do (prior to a reformat or a major hardware replacement). I bought a couple new hard drives and figured I'd just swap the new ones back and forth with the old ones, moving the data around like I always do.

It's usually a simple operation, no?

I always figured so, too, but my old secondary hard drive (an old Maxtor 40gb) was giving me serious problems. For instance, when I had it configured as a master on ide 1, the system wouldn't see ANY of my disks and it wouldn't boot. If I had it as a slave on ide 1, my system wouldn't recognize any drives on the channel. If I had it slaved on ide 0, I could boot normally, but my system wouldn't see the drive as being connected.

I was in quite the quandry because that drive had alot of pretty important stuff on it....tax returns, Paint Shop stuff, archived crap, family pictures, exported settings, all that jazz. Nothing I can't live without, but it would be a MAJOR pain to replace.

I said "screw it" and bought a USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure hoping that the move off the ide channels would be a help.

Nope.

What it's doing is this: It shows itself as being connected and in working order in the device manager (shows as "Maxtor R Omulus USB Device" under "Disk Drives"). When I power it on and off, I get the USB "connected" and "disconnected" tone. It doesn't show up in Explorer, My Comp, or Disk Management, though 🙁. No matter how much refreshing and twiddling I do (like moving jumpers from master, slave, cs, and back again), no matter which USB port I plug it into, I get nothing. This happens on both my desktop and my laptop. I've even tried using Maxblast, but I get pretty much the same thing, meaning that Maxblast sees it, but won't let me do anything with it.

I'm beginning to think I somehow busted the drive during the upgrade from old system to new. Or maybe I'm missing something really obvious? Anyone seen anything like this and can lemme know how to get this stupid thing to show up in My Computer? Thanks in advance!

edit nm, you said its not in disk management.

does it show up in device manager?

edit: oh you said its in device manager

can you take screenshots of device manager and disk manager?

Oops, sorry. I'm using XP. The very slim documentation that came with the enclosure said I didn't need to use any drivers other than the ones provided with Windows (which makes sense, if it's treated as a plain jane mass-storage device...just in case, though, I tried using the drivers that came with the disk. no love).

Anyway:

I guess IMG tags don't work here, but here's a couple links showing screen shots of the device manager and computer manager:

Thanks again. Even if I can't get my problem solved, I'm pretty stoked I can get replies this fast. You guys rock.

Try this... The drivers that are loaded, delete them. This will force windows to come up with new drivers (load default drivers), and sometimes works... And it's worth a try as well.
Tas.

is there any info on the volumes tab of the device manager entry for that enclosure?

how big is the drive?

can you get another enclosure soon? chipsets inside the enclosure tend to run from rock solid to really flakey. in fact, i've had good and bad luck using the exact same enclosure model before. and try another USB cable.

gl!

>.<

I really wish I could help, but that situation baffles me. I will help keep this thread at the top of the forum so you can get your question answered by someone...

Best of luck!
