Hard disk enclosures and compatibility with =>2TB disks

Someone I know likes to have a lot of storage capacity available. At the moment he has a dual docking bay which is connected to his computer via USB 3.0, which works well enough (he typically has 2 disks connected simultaneously, 3TB and 2TB). Both are Seagate. The docking bay is ICY-BOX.

However, he has an extra 2TB disk, a Samsung, which doesn't work in that bay allegedly but definitely does work in another one which he bought, a Thermaltake BlacX dual-docking bay with an eSATA interface and USB 2.0. A further however is that neither of the previously mentioned two Seagate drives work in the Thermaltake at all. One allegedly wants a new disk signature written to it and the other asks to be formatted.

I've tried out some lower capacity disks in the Thermaltake including a Seagate 500GB, and both slots in the Thermaltake work fine, as does having both disks connected to it via eSATA.

I'm wondering whether other people have had similar issues with enclosures/docking bays and high capacity disks.

FWIW, OS is Win7 HP 64 SP1 with all updates. I also tried various eSATA drivers including the Windows standard AHCI SATA driver for the eSATA interface but it made no difference. Also, in the BIOS when the eSATA interface announces itself, when I had the 2TB Seagate connected it didn't list it. I didn't check what it said for the 3TB but that was enough to convince me that it wasn't a bizarre Windows/driver problem.

Do you mean the Samsung 2TB? I assume that if it works in the BlacX, it'll work in other machines. I haven't tried any of the =>2TB disks in other machines.

Oh, I see, I misread.

Anyway, the bridge chips have to support drives larger than 2TB. (Something about the block addressing. I'm fuzzy on the details, I just remember this being an issue before.)

Technically, the hard limit is 2.1 TB, which puts 3TB drives out of the running, but I guess some firmwares have a slightly lower limit. (Google shows enclosures with 1.5TB limits, for instance - you probably have something similar.)

The specifics of the enclosure's drive support will be available from the enclosure manufacturer, and it comes down to the bridge chip and firmware for it.

I've contacted Thermaltake in the hope that they have something useful to say about it. At some point I'd like to get a dual docking bay myself but I would want to be reasonably certain about its compatibility with currently available drives.

Some makers.

LaCie and some others build the external and its parts but they use a hard drive from a manufac.... for example mine... its a Samsung in there. But if you buy WDC or Seagate you get their drive in it.

tweakboy, I'm not sure if you realise that I mean I'm buying a standalone enclosure or docking bay and putting a drive in it?

Thermaltake have a firmware update for this device that they recommended to me which I'll try.

Any updates on this? I have a 3 TB HDD, and I've just discovered that my Vantec and Thermaltake docks won't recognize them...
