Ever thought about quitting teaching to start a cider business?

It's actually not that far fetched of an idea. Inbev (Annheiser Busch) finally released one under one of their many many brands it's out now and called "Cidre"

Hard Cider, is DEFINITELY taking off for a straight up-shoot as far as investment is concerned. If you actually put money into it I promise you it's going up.


Edit: Angry Orchard actually comes in a close second to Woodchucks. They have some damn good ones.

Dr. Pizza, I think you should take advantage of your trees and spend the next couple years learning how to make bespoke, hand crafted cider. That shit can get expensive in the store. It's america's first great fermented drink. Johny appleseed seeded sour apples for Ale, which men drank when they weren't drinking Rye Whiskey. It has history and can be lucrative.

Age that shit as you learn, and when you're about ready to retire, live off your pension and start an honest to god business, selling whatever vintage you bottled (or, is it aged in barrels?) when you started getting good at fine ale.

Your son is a journeyman electrician, right? That takes intelligence, and perhaps just the right kind of intelligence to set up a bigger operation, no?

Electricians have skills at a profession...they only average a 20 something Wonderlic as a whole.

I imagine an electrician would be good at picking equipment for a fermentation process and good at fixing it when it breaks down.

If it was bad cider like Strongbow (it ain't great) or one of the mass market American ciders, I'm sure marketing it would take a gift for marketing. But when you already own a shit load of apple trees good for cider, can fix your big machines without calling a guy, and years of experience making small batches of fine product, the marketing isn't as important. They have maintenance and the trees already paid for, so they can survive on lower margins and eventually getting big enough to pay someone good at marketing.

You don't have to be mensa to run a small business, especially when you have built in advantages, bro. And if you are good at fixing electronics, you can probably learn how to run a small shop full of advanced machinery and other tools. It would probably help when running a big fucking fermenter.

I work with these guys almost daily on million dollar installs. They know nothing about the total job, but if we hire them they usually are spot on. If the customer hires them, it's hit or miss.

I am not sure if you are crazy or stoned now.

I can guarantee Dr. Pizza is not going to be delivering Hard Cider for the masses within the next 10 years at least at a national level based on your business plan.

We were in a Publix and this shit was recommended to my fiancée as "every girl loves this stuff!" when we were looking for an alternative to her Smirnoff Ice with Grenadine.

She has switched now to Tokaji and some Rossi Sweet Red and Sangria as staples.

I love my Mich Ultra.

We have a lot of booze here. Tequilia, Rum, whiskey, bourbon, wines from dark red to light white, some mixers, no 'nag here, Vodka represented. Probably more stuff that I forget about since it's just for guests because we don't like it mostly.

Actually, one of my friends does do cider, as well as beer. He started out about 2 years ago, and is already earning enough to make a living off it. It's not for me though. I remember things like last year - I didn't press a single apple; horrible year due to a very early warm spring, followed by a couple of frosts at their normal times of the year. Everything bloomed early and there were only a smattering of apples; not even worth the bother to pick enough for one gallon. Right now, I have 8 or 9 large bins of apples; I'd estimate about enough for 40 more gallons of apple cider; and no shortage of apples. But, I find it to be something I do to relax, not something I'd ever do for profit.

Heck, I have an open invitation to at least half a dozen families with kids for this weekend - stop by, I'll take you to the trees, you pick, you press, and the kids can also visit the goats and llama. Even 3 year olds would be able to do a lot of the work picking apples (my strategy: shake the shit out of the trees so the apples fall on tarps below the trees. Then, even little kids can pick up the apples and put them in bins.
