Hard-boiled eggs

i eat 2 hard-boiled eggs about 4 mornings a week (along with my cereal breakfast). my total cholesterol was measured at my last checkup this past saturday at 219 and my bad cholesterol was 146. i have a checkup in 6 months.

my wife says that my cholesterol will go up at my next checkup because there is a lot of cholesterol in eggs.

i disagree because saturated fats is the greater contributor to blood cholesterol and NOT the actual cholesterol in the foods.

who is correct? or at least more accurate?
 
I heard that the recommended number of egg (yolks) eaten in a given week should not exceed 4 for optimal health. 8 is just way too much and should probably have a negative impact on your cholesterol level. If you have to eat 8 eggs a week I would ditch 4 of the yolks.

I never eat an egg without the yolk, but this statement is the answer to the OP's question.

I think everyone reacts a little different to this. There have been periods in my life where I eat about 1 eggs with the yolks, per week. Then other periods, without changing any other part of my diet, I stop eating eggs altogether. (I binge on them some months 🙂 ). My cholesterol at the ends of either of those 2 periods is no different.

genetics plays a pretty big role in it. There's actually a protein if I remember correctly, that causes your body to collect cholesterol in your veins, I think Lipitor actually works by inhibiting this protein and preventing the buildup of the cholesterol in your veins.
 
Lipitor works by inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis fairly early on in the cycle. Which is weird, because cholesterol is the building block of most hormones, corticosteroids, etc.

A number of health care professionals have told me this as well. Genetics and lifestyle are the two biggest factors. If your family has a history of high cholesterol you are more or less screwed, short of meds. Exercise is really one of the best things you can proactively do to lower it. Next up is eating lots of veggies and fiber/whole grain foods.

Cutting out eggs isn't going to make a major impact IMHO.

Didn't you go over this with your friggin' doctor?!
 
If your body is processing food correctly (no diabetes, liver, metabolism problems) then it can process cholesterol correctly and eating eggs will have no impact on cholesterol levels.

If you are already fat, no exercise, feel worn out, no energy all the time, then you may have a metabolism imbalance and it would affect your cholesterol.

In other words, if you are in good shape, no effect, if you arent' in good shape, it will effect you.

he left me a voicemail last night and i haven't been able to get in touch with him. at the first opportunity, i will ask him directly.

for now, i'm asking the general population of ATOT what they know about this if that's ok with you.

When I was in great shape/optimal weight (running every other day and lifting the off days) I brought my Total Cholestrol down to 196. 🙁

 
I think two is perfectly fine. I eat fast food for morning and lunch 6-7 days a week and I'm still alive. 🙂

Now you have me craving hard boiled egg.
 
I use to ponder this dilemma back in the day. I want all the protein I can get from the egg but I don't want to worry about the cholesterol and fat from the yolks if I eat too much. So my own compromise is to eat about a 2 whites to 1 yolk ratio. I eat about 6-8 eggs a week (so about 3-4 yolks) which seems to be working out well.

As a side note, I also rarely fry eggs anymore. I bought one of those microwave egg poacher things. Fast, no extra grease, and easy to clean :thumbsup:
 
I eat a lot of eggs (they're free!), and have no problems with cholesterol. My cholesterol blood levels are "beautiful." Genetics plays the biggest role in cholesterol.

I had that same thing happend from a blood test the doctor crossed out good and wrote
"Excellent"

Lots (and lots and lots) of cancer but no heart problems in my family. I'd much rather die of a massive coronary than cancer, ....lucky
