Happy with new Unlocked T-bird, but not my HS/Fan.....

I recently bought upgraded my new system with an FIC AD11, 1.2 Ghz Tbird, ATi Radeon 64 MB DDR, and 512 MB DDR memory. It is sooo nice. I was not going to overclock, didn't feel like doing the pencil trick, just going to leave it alone. Then today I decided I'd try it, couldn't hurt, right? Turns out it was unlocked the whole time. :)

I'm now running at 1.33 Ghz, going to try for 1.4 in a sec. No lockups or anything just yet. Im' using the stock HS/fan from my retail box, should I buy a GlobalWin? The local computer shop has them in stock, not sure which one exactly, are they all better than the stock?

WHat is the best software for checking CPU temp in windows?
ALso, should I dl a program to cool the chip while its running, not sure what they are called. Any help would be great!

My 3dMark2001 went from 3410 to 3549.

YAY

Nice system...I like to use Motherboard Monitor 5. You can find it HERE or you can always check your temps in the trusty bios.

I would find out what your temps are before you look for cooling software, and if you're running Windows Me or Win2K, there is a built in idle command that should keep cpu use to a minimum.

OR you can put those spare cpu cycles to use and join Team Anandtech! RC5 or any of the other distributed computing programs are a great way to test system stability on an overclocked system...just another added bonus...

HA! I love advertising! :) :Q

Hope this helps...

Well is it running 1.2 @ 1.4 right now. I upped the voltage from 1.75 to 1.775. I had a lockup while doing a 3d render, and the bump helped.

The BIOS vcore read 1.85 when it was the default 1.75 and 1.87 when it was set to 1.775 on the DIP switches. Hmmm, anyone else with this problem?
I will do the RC5 thing. I'm about to set it up.

Thanks.

The temp in BIOS was 48 deg.

Motherboard and PSU variances can cause the actual voltage to be higher than the default, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks. MBM 5 is installed. There are three temps.

Sensor 1 is 22 deg
Sensor 2 is 46 deg
Sensor 3 is 27 deg

What is what? Sensor 2 is CPU, but the others?

You think I should try higher than 1.4? I am usinf 133 mhz FSB and 10.5x.
Go for 11x or increase FSB?

graff,

I hope you have a good HSF, cause when you run RC5 it will run your cpu at full load...just a warning. I run RC5 on my pc 24/7 and I get temps of 46-48C depending on ambient temps. BTW I'm running a TBird 900 @ 1020. Good Luck!

The CPU was running around 53+ with the stock. I got a new HS/F from my friend. Its a GLobalWin FOP38. Its running a few degrees cooler.

On GlobalWins site, it says it's fan spins at 6800 +/- 10% RPM.
I am running at 5110 RPM. Whats the deal? DId I get a HS with a crappy fan on it? I have been steady at 48 deg running full load for about 25 minutes. I figure if it were gonna get any hotter it would have by now. True????

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the FOP38 fan plug directly to the power supply and not on the motherboard header? If thats the case, I don't think you will be able to measure rpm. Do you have any other fans on your pc?

When you say full load, is that with RC5 running? I'd probably give it at least an hour to gauge the max temperature. If you have any questions about RC5 or how to join Team Anandtech, check out the distributed computing forum. Lots of friendly and helpful people in there.

You are right. I had the FOP-32. Ugh. It was better than the AMD stock, but only like 4 degrees. I am gonna get a better one off the net somewhere. Any suggestions? There are so many to choose from, I have no idea...

I am gonna join the RC5 team this afternoon, after my 24 hours is up.

Thanks

System temp was like 28, didn't rise very much, pretty much remained the same for both. CPU was 48 vs 52 or so. I stopped it when it got that high. It could've gone higher possibly.

The FOP38 can plug into either the motherboard or the PSU. I plugged mine into the motherboard (KT7-RAID) and I had no problems at all. However, it was way too loud for me, so I had to quit using it. :\

Just ordered the Alpa PAL 6035 with Delta. Hope it fits in my AD11! Loud but oh well. Realistically, how loud is it? I had a dual celeron setup before and it was pretty loud with two fans going, but they were globalwin's. Not sure of the model. SHould be able to tell in a few days. I'm going to go back to 1.2 for the time being.

DO I need a 3 to 4 pin connector? I've heard of the fan connection blowing out on the motherboards.
