I'm Jewish in the same way that Carlos Mencia is German. Technically, yes, I am, but you wouldn't guess it to look at me, and I certainly don't advertise my heritage. Which is not to say I'm by any means ashamed of my Jewish background, it's just that I was raised by a Jew and a Catholic in a very secular household. I didn't even know it was Purim (or really what Purim was). But I'm totally using that as an excuse to get trashed tonight.

Viva Purim!

They used to tell us not to go trick or treating on halloween because we had our own holiday with masks and candy. It was not an effective argument. If your faith can't survive a bunch of kids celebrating what is now a secular holiday, such a fragile thing doesn't deserve to survive.

I think that's a bad argument as well, for another reason. But this thread is not the place for it.

McCain getting some grief for calling Purim the Jewish halloween, which growing up I found to be a pretty accurate description. Lieberman again steps in to help. VP spot hunting again?

Purim has absolutely nothing to do with Halloween.

Tell it to my rabbi who kept telling us not to celebrate halloween because we had purim. No, they are not the same holiday, but are often mentioned together. Even in the article orthodox jew Liebs takes the blame for telling McCain purim was like halloween.

I would gladly discuss it with your rabbi. Those who mention it together usually do so out of ignorance. I'm an Orthodox Jew as well, so Lieberman got nothing on me. :)

I don't think anyone is claiming Purim commemorates All Saints Day, just that people wear costumes. And it's a very popular comparison, even by the Israeli media:

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/964476.html
"Second in the costume hit-parade for boys is the Invisible Man, a costume associated with America's version of Purim - Halloween."

The article is about costume shopping for Purim and it reads identically to shopping for a Halloween costume.

Of course people associate the two because of the costumes and candy. They are indeed similar in that way, but in reality they are so very different.

Happy Purim to you too! I totally forgot about it because I am at university, but my mom mentioned she was dressing my nephews up.

No problem. Step right up and drop trou. Where's my exacto knife? Where you going?
