And no, when it comes to people making claims about health benefits their opinions really does NOT mean anything. People used to be of the opinion that bleeding was beneficial. They did that shit for two thousand years and harmed god knows how many. Plenty of people have opinions about alternative medicine or chiropractors or ridiculous claims about vaccines causing autism and they are still wrong. Any medical claim that doesn't have evidence to back it up is superstition and quackery.

OMG you truly are a fucking idiot. Thanks for the laugh. Next troll, try and add some creativity and artfulness to it.

Basically on Fridays you limit yourself to just one meal for the day. That meal must also exclude meat. You can drink whatever you want.

The hardest part was lunch time while I was at work because a good lunch helped me relax for the rest of the day. However, overcoming the desire to eat, including the associated aversion to being hungry, increases your mental discipline and in my case, growth in love for God.

🙂

He's not trying out Lent. lolololol

Keith, he wants to convert you. Youtube cleansing must be slow.

I can not possibly give you the education you apparently missed in every grade of school, so I won't argue with you other than to tell you you are completely clueless. Like it or not you live in a culture utterly shaped and dominated by religion. You are confused by a few strange rituals and a few loudmouths, and due to this view all religion and religious with scorn and derision, and in a stupefying oversimplification assign all problems to religion and all success to science, when they are inextricably historically linked.

Even a cursory examination of the history of science would show you this: there would be no science without religion. Fundamentally they have the same goal, so it is also purely logical in the complete absence of historical evidence to assume one grew from the other.

Don't get me wrong, I am no defender of religion, nor do I subscribe to any. I'm not a flat-earther, young earther, Earth-centrist, or snake-handler. Science is wonderful and I revere and respect it, and believe in even the things I do not understand, because they are brought to me by people who make convincing arguments; the same people that make my microwave, television, and computer work, thereby proving quantum-mechanics, ab evidentia. I'm just saying your perspective on this seems so rigid and narrow ...so anti-scientific that it makes me laugh and feel sorry for you at once.

Science is an evolution of Religion, which makes it superior in finding hard answers. Religion is still relevant because people need to find meaning beyond the hardness and cruelty of nature, which society has transcended, but mere mortals have not.

The problem while the Catholic church long ago accepted physical sciences, it still can't accept basic biomedical and social science findings. Or, is extremely slow on accepting in ceding points, such as condoms lowering AIDS transmission rates. This is because that it's power structure is made up of 'celibate' priests who base all their theological powers on being separate from humanity because the have they can perform the sacraments, and have intertwined celibacy with those powers.

Of course, priests never were completely celibate... leading to many, many surreptitious liaisons with adults, and fewer (but present in all western countries) child predators.

i don't think i saw a single person with a smudge on their forehead today at work

TBH if not for this thread i would have had no idea today was lent

I have a strong dislike for religion and god belief, but if a bunch of people want to walk around with dirt on their head, I dont care. They can do what they want, and are free to believe as they want.

And we're all free to ridicule them if we want.

If someone decides to publicly wear ash/dirt on their forehead they should come to expect it.

It is no more ridiculous than someone who covers from the tip of their head to their toes such as a burqa. Neither should be ridicule.

... the science is in: one of the best ways to lose weigh is to fast every other day. (or at-least that's what radio-doctor Dean Edell told me)

CoW, this is how you do it:

I have a strong dislike for religion and god belief, but if a bunch of people want to walk around with dirt on their head, I dont care. They can do what they want, and are free to believe as they want.

Seems a bit childish.
Hahahhahahahahhaahahahhah

I would not publicly ridicule a religious co-worker, neighbor, etc. However, if I joined a religion that demanded I wear a purple star on my cheek, I'd expect to be ridiculed for my beliefs.

In fact, doesn't the Bible state that Christians should be prepared for persecution and to embrace it?

Matthew 5:10-12 said:
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven...

I'm also pretty sure Jesus spoke out against those that publicly draw attention to their faith. Hmm...

Matthew 6:5 said:
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

It's difficult to pay any respect or hold back ridicule for people who not only believe in something without any evidence but who display that faith in a method totally contrary to how their god wants them to.

"help help I'm being repressed!"
"that's what I"m on about!"
"did you see him repressing me!"

Usually do embrace it (though this is only comes up if someone asks, and is minor at best); today, for you, I called you out on it. If only because you've been a dishonest broker in the past. Interestingly, dishonest brokers are fairly rare here on ATOT; aslong as you're intellectually honest in your conversations.

After being slapped down repeatedly for the shit-headedness inherent in religious indoctrination, I think I've learned to be much more respectful of those I disagree with. I would engage your religious arguments but I, again, don't see you as intellectually honest.

BTW

Almost everyone on this forum has a 130+ IQ; so very few of us are religious idiots, If you improve your level of discourse you'll improve who you are as a person.

I've examined several religions with a great deal of intellectual honesty and likely know more about your own religion than you do. I constantly re-evaluate my positions on religion and relish debating those positions against those of differing opinions.

How often to do you pick apart your religious views? Put them under scrutiny? Or do you have your opinions and viewpoints hammered home to you every Sunday by a preacher? Are they solely based on what you were taught as a child?

If you think I'm being intellectually dishonest you better go back and read your posts, my friend.

got a chip on the other shoulder bro?

Maybe you've not noticed that you're not on a forum for tractor-pulls or pro wrestling; With the rare exception, everyone here is a deep-thinking self-reflective intelligent person that has examined their own belief structure and reflected on their life experiences.

Many of us have been here since the K6-3 days, putting us in our late 20s to 30s; almost all of us are computer geeks, which usually indicates we're in the top 5% of the population intellectually.

While there are notable exceptions, this is not reddit, this is not 4-chan, this is a rare place where you can find people as smart as you are (and in a few cases much smarter); if you fail to recognize that fact then it says more about you than the folks for whom you've so much vitriol.

Now, if you want to step out of your basement-dweller-solipsism and into a more reasoned philosophy (I suggest Dewy's pragmatism, but am willing to speak to whatever ontological/epistemological assumptions you wish) then we can have an honest discussion about facts, philosophy, theory, history, the meaning of being, ethics, etc.

I'd welcome it. So far, you've seemed more inclined to toss around ad homs or assumptions rather than speak to anything of substance.

Oh and speaking of assumptions, I'll let my Fortune 500 clients know what a basement dwelling solipsist I am. 🙄
