No other game in my life had such an effect on me like Quake did. Seeing those real-time shadows for the first time playing the Quake demo was amazing. Definitely in my top 5 all-time list.

I was horribly disappointed when they didn't follow through with the artwork and monsters for the original Doom and Quake in the sequels. Carmack still doesn't seem thrilled with the idea of recreating the original game. Rage is the first real deviation from the strog universe in a coons age and he needs to get back in touch with his roots if you ask me. The Id Tech 5 engine is more then up to the task so he can keep his precious 60 fps, but its time to let the artists decide what looks good. Ditch all the stogg and gray skinned monsters with twenty eyes and give us some serious graphics. Monsters straight out of Dante's Inferno that look you in the eye before they try to eat you.

Playing GLQuake in 98 was awesome, first time I had gotten into it. I still remember this moat map in CTF. I'd hit super health and red armor, load up on lightening gun, then shock the op team when they'd try to get our flag, taking out 5+ guys and surviving.

Rocket + Grapple = fun.

Fun stuff.

I used to be afraid of playing quake 2. Used to hate those guys with rail guns, so little time to dodge their shots!

so nostalgic

I remember the first time I ever saw Quake. It was late at night and a friend was playing it in a darkened room. It blew me away.

I actually prefer the strogg (Q2) over quake one. Both were amazing games though. Quake 2, classic doom, and starcraft are probably my top 3 classics, in no order.

One thing I really liked in the original quake over Q2 was the thunder bolt, and the creativity of some of the bosses, I remember some were more like puzzles where instead of constantly unloading rockets, there was actually a trick to killing them. whether it be a telefrag, or electric shocks to the lava monster, quake one had some real interesting bosses. Similar to the final boss in doom 2.

super nail gun was also fun :D

oh, and the rail gun guys in Q2 were called gladiators. they are actually quite easy to defeat at close range, the trick is to take the double shotgun, and stay just outside of their swinging range with the claw. they wont try to rail you, and will instead chase with the melee attack. however, if they do have a shot on you, they usually hit and it hurts.

and finally, I would like to give mention to one of my favorite tactical games of all time, one of the most under appreciated, under supported games from id software, (and splashdamage) the great enemy territory quake wars.

I remember quake, it seems like only a few days ago that I was going to quakecon in 1997 and 1998.

My favorite was runes quake, where the runes gave you certain power ups, and the grappling hook.

Over the past 15 years, I dont think any game shaped the online gaming community like what quake did. There was rocket arena, team fortress, CTF, deathmatch, painkeep, rune quake,,,, and they were all great.

Quake :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I agree with wuliheron, the original gothic / technological look of quake was amazing. I hated when they did away with the gothic design, it made it look so much more generic.

Q2CTF Zoid Mod. Best FPS of all time. The grappling made everything so much quicker pace and intense. Rail gun + Quad Damage = good times...

Q2CTF would have never been made without Threewave CTF in Quake 1. Probably the all time greatest CTF game/mod.

And Expert CTF (and several dull spinoffs) were before Threewave (which I enjoyed more). Although Zoid was behind Threewave CTF as well as Quakeworld, which makes him a pretty damn good programmer.

However, I never realized he worked on Metroid Prime and currently works for Valve. Crazy.

My first MP experience was Doom on a dial up. I didn't get into Quake I for some reason, by the time a friend talked me into getting it Quake II came out. I played that one a lot, I thought I was pretty good at it. UT was the last fps I played online, can't remember which (before 2k3). Games just don't grip me any longer.

I played so much Q1 and Q2 when I was a kid. I remember designing my own maps for Q2 back in 2000. I was always one of those guys with the railgun who would own you the moment you walked around a corner!!!

Ahh, yes, nostalgia time!!

Quake 1 was my first online mutli player as well. Even the mud's I played came after :p

I loved ctf, but my real love was team fortress. That mod grabbed me like very few games/mods have since. So many hours spent with the old tf clan I was in.

I liked quake 2 ctf, tf, and later team fortress classic, but never as much as quake team fortress.

wasn't that q2 ctf?

i'd load up the double barrel shotty, the autodoc, and power armor and play defense the whole round. very rarely got flag capping points but usually ended up at or near the top as i wouldn't die.

edit: nope, i'm a noob. spent all of q1 playing tf anyway.
