Thought this was a decent enough deal to warrant its own thread. Why buy from Tigerdirect when you can get this from PC Connection for less.

Ripped from TB. (And props to geekender for posting this in this thread)

PC Connection has the Hann-G 196D LCD w/DVI/speakers/8ms for $129 + shipping after a $20 and $90 rebate. ($239.95 - $90 - $20 = 129.95) Go over $249 and get free shipping! Link!

Fillers to get free shipping...
USB 2.0 to DB9M serial cable $6.95 after $7 rebate Link
TRENDnet gigabit PCI card $3.95 after $10 rebate Link
56k PCI modem $4.83 after $5 rebate Link
TRENDnet wireless G PCMCIA card $2.95 after (2) $10 rebates. Link

OR try the clearance section and sort by items under $10.00.

UPDATE: This is apparently a different monitor than in the TD deal. This is the HU-196D and TD is selling the HN-199D. They look to be identical aside from the bezel being silver colored on the 196D. ALthough this one is black. Hanns-G website

I have had this monitor for over a week now and I love it. I previously was using a Samsung 950P which I really liked, but the Hanns-G is much smaller and looks great. No dead/stuck pixels either. I actually like the speakers which are a vast improvement over my previous speakers (If that is any indication of how bad my other speakers are!). This is set up in my bedroom so small speakers work great for me. All in all (assuming I have no issues with the rebates) I am VERY happy with this purchase.

They've treated me well. I note the 16.2m color limit, though, which says 6-bit to me. How much of an advantage is 8-bit color?

(edit: I have an old 21" CRT that is going to fail me some day soon- It makes loud noises when turned on it flickers frequently. Is this going to be the replacement?)

I have personally never ordered from them, but they would have to try pretty hard to be as bad as TD!

Reseller Ratings seems decent. Link

As for the 16.2 vs 16.7 million color debate it seems that many people can't tell a noticable difference in normal usage. Faster response times seem to be more of an issue that the color depth for most users. That said, I have never seen this monitor in person so I can't say how well it looks or performs.

I have a Viewsonic VP171b and an Acer Al1916. The Acer is 6 bit and the Viewsonic is 8 bit, and there's definitely a noticeable difference in the way they produce certain colors. They're both using a DVI connection. The Acer is 2" bigger and was $200 cheaper so I'm not complaining. :D

I have not heard too many negative things about this monitor. There are many things that contribute to the overall image quality of a display aside from the color depth such as DVI vs analog, contrast and brightness, response times, etc. I have seen Samsung monitors that only have 6 bit color blow lesser quality 8 bit displays out of the water. If anyone has any real world experience with this monitor let us know.

Just an FYI,

The $90 rebate is through OnRebate.com and is NOT a manufacturer's rebate.

I believe that is even better since you can have it sent in less time to paypal for a small fee.

I just included that since OnRebate.com = TigerDirect.com and people have some issues with them. And also because I work at HannsG and am tired of people yelling at me for "our" rebate.

Does this mean you get many calls? Additionally, would you hesitate at this deal?

Since I work for HannsG I don't like to give recommendations. Everyone will call me a shill, pimp, etc. and noone will believe me anyway. All I can suggest is that you do your own research and make the most informed decision you can. I enjoy this forum and have learned a lot about spicing up my computer, and I don't want where I work having a negative impact on my interactions here.

Sorry if that isn't very helpful for you.

Edit: as for your question about calls, our call rate is below what we expected it to be. Our return/defect rate so far is below what I have been told are "industry standards". This is my first job in the LCD industry, so I can't verify if what I have been told is completely correct or not.

Im not quite sure what your seeing but the VP171b is not an 8-bit panel.....it came out in two diff panels one 16ms and later an 8ms. Both were TN's.....im sry to inform you now but i can assure you its a TN, even with its 19" brotherin the VP191B and the VP930b both using a 8-bit P-MVA. I know it doesnt really make sense to do that but its what they did.

Not sure if this comes with a DVI cable, but I don't have DVI anyway... Anyone know of any deals on a cheap DVI video card with dual monitor support? I do VERY little gaming so a high end card would be a waste of money.

Thanks OP, I may bite. z42, do you know if this comes with a DVI Cable? I don't see it listed under contents on the PC Connection website.

OnRebate.com = Bad bad bad bad.
I've got burned myself and followed the threads on the RS X-connect power supply deal. Many people report they deny, deny, deny even though you have copies of everything you sent. For me they said "no signature" Send them a copy of the signed form I kept. Nothing happens for 6 weeks. Called again. Now they say "no invoice with order number" I asked why there was no notice? They say since there was no status change (it is still denied) there was no status change e-mail generated. I sent in both the e-mailed inovoice AND copy of packing list. They say we can refer this to "research" which takes 2-3 weeks. I got fed up and called RS CS. Within 4 hours it got magically approved. I do not know if PC connection would be as helpful with resolving rebate issues. I've gotten stuff from them before with other manufacturer rebates, and got all of them. Delivery was quick. So my beef is with OnRebate.

OnRebate gave me a lame excuse last time too, but after that they did send the check. I've only dealt with them that once, so far, so we'll see if this order goes smoothly or if it cements them in the TigerDirect camp.

Oog. Now I get to hope that they don't suck as badly as they used to on rebates.

If I'd seen this this morning over my coffee, I would not have ordered the monitor. since I have ordered, I'm just going to have to hope that Amato, Peter is less criminally incompetent than he or his predecessor was a few years back.
