This has been happening to me for about a year and i just recently have had the time to try and find out whats causing the problem---

anyway i have a:
Athlon 1800+ XP (btw what clock speed does this run at? on my computer it says 1.154 or soemthing like that but that cant be rite-is it?)
512 DDR Ram
Geforce 2 MX400 (4 ti4200 in the mail NICE)
XP Pro

i start up the computer...it comes to the screen where it says pick your user...whatever user I pick it says loading user setting and stays there for about 2-3 minutes then finally loads windows...i tried delteing all users except my main user and other stuff like that no avail

what should i do? id rather not install XP b/c i honostly dont have the time nor feel like it and I dont think this will fix the prob...so any1 have any idea what I can do to fix this problem?

Try disabling some of the additional services and see if you can track the hang down to one of them.

Like Bill said there could be some services; likely the networking variety starting up causing the delay.

XP 1800+ runs at 1.53Ghz. The reason it's running at your current speed is; because of your FSB which is set at 100. Bump it up to 133 and you'll gain 1.53 ( I have the same chip).

On my own machine which had that delay before I discovered the problem to be the PPPoE starting up. I had 2 NICs so I could run ICS, but on the advice of a professional I assigned the primary NIC an IP, even though the ISP said to leave it blank. If you have a similar setup, try setting 192.168.0.15 for your primary NIC. This should resolve it.

RE-installing XP isn't much of a problem on your setup. 20-30 minutes TOPS. Streamline the SP1 and you're set to go.

how do i bump up the fsb to 133? waht exactly is the option in the bios? is it all done on bios or software or do i gota do shiz to the chip? thanks btw

It's gonna either be in the BIOS, or a jumper on the mainboard. Tell us EXACTLY what motherboard(manufacturer, model, and rev. #) and we can help you a little more on that one.

Also, If you have the manual for your mobo, that should be able to answer you question also.

NEVERMIND! found the manual! It is an---
well on top right it randomly says E347
It also says in center-- Asus PSA-B Super 7 Motherboard

Ali Aladdin V AGPste
Socket 7 Proccesors

512 KB/1MB L2 Cache
ESS 3d PCI Audio Optional
PC100 SDRAM and 100 MHZ FSb (FSB! FSB! LOL)
PC Heealth MOnitoring
baby AT FOrm factor

...

actually...while reading up on this motherboard--- it has mostly settings in the manual for pentium 2's and amd-k6-2......could this be the manual of my older board? i dont see why it would be with the manualls for my new computer that i get last year then.....i dont think i ever took it out be4...coudl it be possible that this motherboard is what i have with my setup? thanks alot

Shiat--- LOL yea that was the old 1---
the new motherboard (the 1 i have...the 1 we r talkin bout)...its a-

Asus A7M266
Socket A motherboard
AMD 761 Chipset
DDR Ram
and the numbers randomly in top right are E776

DDR based motherboards are fairly new and current so it should be in your BIOS. Go to power options or something like that and raise the FSB or it might be called the multiplier. You'll definitely see 100, in which case raise it to 133 or if you prefer raise it higher to clock that baby. I'm running 143/11.5 which is netting me 1.63Ghz.

thanks

it worked
i think

I changed Operating Frequency Setting from 1150 to 1533 (the only other option)
then automatically under it it changed FSB from 100 to 133 (you cant manually change that specific thing)
so i think this worked rite?
also there was a random other thing under that called System Performance- i changed it from normal to turbo lol wut does that do?

ok...so now that im at 133 fsb...how do i find out my present clock speed?

You set Frequency to manual, then you can change it to whatever speeds your setup can handle. Judging from your knowledge of windows OS, I'd caution against it and say leave it at the factory speed before you fry something.

To check your speed, right click MY COMPUTER, it should read out what your clock speed is.

if i go to manual i can put it up 1 mhz at a time

how many can i put it up before i start hurting the processor?
its at 134 rite now...running at 1.55....should i put it back to 133? should i put it even faster? will this cuase any harm to my processor? if the asnwer is yes...then can i install a larger better fan and then have it not cause any harm? thanks alot!

ok im very confused about my temp too

on my bios it still says my Mobo temp is 36 C

on this random program i downloade called speedfan there are like 8 diff temperatures--- some being 63 C othera -1 C and others 130 C...thats it

on motherboard monitor 5 it says 44 C

what should i believe and what would be considered too high or even to the point that it would shorten life or slightly damage cpu

ok also i went into the bios..after updating to 133.. the mb temp is 44 and the cpu temp is 62.5...so i guess i should believe that....the 62.5 seems a little high to me....maybe i should get a better fan...whats a decent one to get that will help me out and doesnt cost that much

This question belongs in the CPU/Overclocking forum..

you you have a NIC card? If you have one, and don't have it hooked up to anything, Windows will wait forever before it decided that a connection is not there. I think there is a setting in the registry to shorten the delay, but can't remember where it is.
