Hangs at WindowsXP splash screen on boot

My computer refuses to boot into Windows (XP SP1 installed), It gets to the WindowsXP logo screen immediately folllowing POST. Once there, the little status bar goes around a couple times and then freezes.

The problem originally began when I was running BitTorrent (a small p2p app, very cool btw). I ran into a freezing problem, which at the time I didn't know was a documented problem with the Netgear FA311 (my nic).

I was running two instances of BitTorrent simultaneously, and started getting the (documented) freezing problem quite badly. I hit the reset button, and alas, the computer now hangs on the Windows XP Splash screen.

It boots fine into Safe Mode. I have replaced the Netgear network card with a different one, and now in safe mode, bittorrent has no problems, however it still will not boot up normally. System Restore does not fix the problem. I am not sure exactly to what extent this is related to the original problem with BitTorrent, maybe something got messed up in the reboot or something.

Anyone have any suggestions? I couldn't find anything in the Windows Knowledgebase (I may have missed it) any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try uninstalling TCP/IP and reinstalling it.

It probably is still bound to the Netgear card.

I've tried booting with no network card after uninstalling the new network card drivers and that didn't work. The Netgear card no longer appears in the device manager, so I'm unclear as to how to uninstall tcp/ip.

Boot into safe mode! Click start > run > and type MSCONFIG. Go to the startup tab and select disable all. Some program or driver is causing your problem during startup!

Thanks for the suggestions but....

none of them have succeeded in fixing the problem. Anyone got some more ideas? Thanks.
