However, a swim into COLD water will clear it quickly.

Hangovers are smart, they do not like the cold. Unlike the stupid host that collects a hangover in order to suffer.

I am going to have to try that. I have never heard of taking a swim to help your hangover. I am actually a little suspicious of this suggestion. :)

here's a good article on the matter. probably too long for most on here, though
text

couple of things to consider:

-water is generally the best remedy. plenty before, and after drinking, before bed. the most effective way is to drink water in between drinks...but you'd never get hammered, so what's the point? (assuming this is your goal)

-never, ever, take ibuprofen (or is it aspirin? I forget) while drinking, or soon after/before consuming alcohol. It will tear your liver to shreds.

-The Bloody Mary was developed as a hangover cure. It works, kinda....but it just delays the onset of the methanol processing (the worst part of the hangover), as you introduce more ethanol into your system (which is more readily processed by alcohol dehydrogenase, the enzyme that processes ethanol/methanol).

actually, this is the best method I have ever come across. Toking while drinking has always guaranteed no hangover for me in the morning, as well. (must be quality, though...)

I'm gonna try that and see the diff. for myself.

Key word in the suggestion is in CAPITALS.

Stumbled into a pool (Northern New England) - late May) after HS grad party with my first hangover. (Only one since then)

We had taken the cover off the week-end before and there was a film of ice on the surface.
Wet suits had been used to remove the inlet/outlet pipe plugs.

I went in to the bottom, the hangover must have stayed on the surface.
By the time I dried off, I was clear headed.

I think you are thinking about Tylenol... acetaminophen is fairly hard on the liver, in combination with alchohol it's really bad. NSAID's (Advil/Ibuprofen, Aleve/Naproxen) can be hard on your stomach, they can cause ulcers, I think alcohol increases that risk.

Polar bear swims never did anything for my hangovers. Helped me get more creative with swearing though. :)

I just drink gatorade type stuff and take advil. Nothing I've found helps except making sure to hydrate and time.

Seeing as how you are at work, lots of cold water and Alka-Seltzer. At work but available by prescription only is an anti-emetic called Tigan. It will stop that feeling if you feel like throwing up.

Tigan Info.

If not at work, hair of the dog or Valium is useful.

BTW, those hangover cures (tabs or caps) they sell in liquor stores are useless.

Ah yeah, I always get those confused. Acetaminophen bad for liver, NSAIDs bad for stomach. Alcohol causes micro bleeds in your stomach every time you drink. Adding Advil and such to that is less-than-smart.

God, ever sense my pharmacist bud told me about "micro bleeds," I've been terrified....

Yeah? It just reminds me of that time with the midget on her rag. What a night.

Vitamin C.

Go to the grocery store and spend like $8 for a bottle of 1000mg chewtabs or something. Consume like 4 or 5 of them with water when you get home immediately after drinking and you will not have a hangover. Works for me, all the time.

I think that's what's in those hangover packages anyway, just loads of vitamin C.

Edit:

I actually researched this a while back during a particularly bad hangover. The SCIENTIFIC CURE is Vitamin C and lots of water. Alcohol drains the vitamin C from your body leaving you sick feeling and off-balance.. So the cure is a big glass of orange juice (or a vitamin C pill) followed by plenty of water. That will kill and prevent hangovers. Every time I drink heavily, I pop a vitamin C pill and have a glass of water before bed. It works every time.

This.

Drink some more. I mean that. Just have a couple drinks and it will be as if you never had a hangover. Always works for me.

Oops, didn't read the OP very well. Just tough it out I guess. If you can take 15 minutes try to go see if you can get a beer somewhere or something. Otherwise, water/gatorade + ibuprofen/advil/whatever is your best bet.
