Sorry guys...

EDIT: The big news.

OLD POST:
OK, this is even more of a "FINALLY" than the Amazon thing (or, indeed, the non-mini iPhones) from yesterday.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...gration-is-currently-rolling-out-in-hangouts/

Of course, there seems to be a massive bug (replies are broken) at the moment. Let me do a bit more research.

No update for me on my Note 3 yet.

I use the desktop version of GV a lot to text out. I wonder if after integration I can do that as easily through the desktop version of Hangouts, which it looks like is a Chrome extension. Looking through the extension, I can start typing a contact name but it doesn't exactly point to their cell number, just their name for a regular Hangout instant message. Hoping this changes.

I really don't want to get anywhere near Google+ on this.

Interesting Reddit quote:

Just to chime in I accidentally did this over the weekend. I'm on CM11 on my S4 and linked GV to my phone. Then I sent some messages to my friends thru hangouts and people were asking "who is this?" It was sending through my GV number. They would also reply to it as well and it showed up in hangouts. Super annoying though, it took forever to figure out how to change back.

Isn't that precisely what us GV users have been waiting for? I know I have been. He's on CM though, which can do this for you so it may have been an issue with CM.

This news is everywhere on my tech feed this morning but none of them are actually talking about the one thing that matters: voice calling. As far as I'm concerned Google Voice is about making phone calls, so why all the talk about SMS and voice mails? I don't get it.

^ I refuse to pay any extra money for what is essentially instant messaging and that's the only reason I use GV.

because for most people google voice is used for voice mail because it does speech to txt for free. that's the only reason I use it. Verizon wants money to do that

I wasn't aware of that. Do you find it reliable? I thought people made fun of the particularly hilarious way the text translations are :)

Anyway, it's just strange that nobody even mentioned the voice calling capability (or lack thereof) of this supposedly newly integrated Hangouts. This is the feature that Hangouts on iOS has had for a year, and still not on Android, it's bizarre.

its pretty good but not perfect
and even when not perfect all I have to do is hit play to listen to the voice mail, no dialing in and entering voice mail pin and all that crap

Official post from el Goog:
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2014/09/call-me-maybe-introducing-free-voice.html
Starting today you can make voice calls from Hangouts on Android, iOS and the web. It’s free to call other Hangouts users, it’s free to call numbers in the U.S. and Canada, and the international rates are really low. So keeping in touch is easier and more affordable than ever.

To get started on Android, just grab the new version of Hangouts (v2.3, rolling out over the next few days), then install the accompanying dialer to turn on voice calls. On iOS and the web, voice calls will be available the next time you open the app.

So I didn't get the rollout yet, which is fine, it'll get here eventually.

My question is, is the dialer just for outgoing calls only, or can I also choose to pick up incoming calls over Hangouts (like GrooVeIP or the like) so it doesn't cost me minutes?

My guess is since they went out of their way to name it the 'dialer', then this is strictly just for outgoing calls.

I know that most people don't care about this, but for us who are on paygo plans pinching pennies this is essential! :D

Depends. If the person is on AT&T in good coverage, no problem. If Sprint and their phone is encoding with EVRC not EVRC-B, usually it's terrible. T-mobile, iffy. Verizon, same as sprint, but slightly better-- EVRC? Maybe acceptable. EVRC-B, generally ok

I'd argue a lot of people use Gvoice because of texting and voicemail capabilities. A small portion of users ported their numbers (and IMO not a good idea).

Yes. The google voice app was totally a redheaded step-child. Nice to see integration come to a core app since it hopefully implies continued improvement and support of the service (I seem to remember rumblings that google was going to kill voice).

Google can't kill Google Voice since so many people rely on it. Google Voice number is my business number and I've given that number out to everyone. Killing it now would piss off large group of people. I would be willing to pay small monthly/yearly fee to keep it as it's that important to me.

So would I. If that ever happens, however, they better start supporting MMS properly, across all carriers; and registering the numbers in such a way that all my two-factor auth services can properly send SMS. For example, Facebook and my bank can't/won't SMS to my GV number for whatever reason.

I downloaded the APK. Hope it's safe :)
The SMS part isn't working, but I got GV app for that.

One step closer to only needing a mobile data plan for everything. Texting plans are all but gone, now to work on voice.

I completely agree with the two-factor auth services comment. About MMS, though, just kill it with fire already. I hope Google keep ignoring this so people will finally stop using it :p
