I like your idea ... you could cut a smaller piece just wide enough to go between the 2x6's as a "guide" for the chain ... set it right on top of the drywall and a couple screws though the 2x6's ...

Also, bolt down the 4x4 that goes on very top.

You could also make like a mini-lampshade type cover to put over the hole inside the garage, so you wouldn't see the hole and a little scraped drywall.

Another option would be to tie a chain around that huge gob of wood in the picture and just cut a larger square out of the drywall ... 'cause after all, it's the garage man!
