Hanging during windows installation

For some reason, when I try to install Windows on this machine, it hangs mid-way while it is installing. And it doesn't stop at the same point each time either.

I replaced the HD thinking that was the cause, as it was freezing when it would boot up, and it was an older 10GB 4200RPM Seagate Barracuda ATA II.

I replaced it with a WD 80 GB 7200RPM 8MB HD. First, I tried to install WinXP on the new drive. It hung just as it was loading the initial files before I even got to the point to format the drive. It started to hang while it was loading the files for "Windows Executive."

Then, I tried installing Win2k. I got further with it. I was able to partition the drive and format it. However, it then hung at 6% during the "Setup is copying files" stage.

What's the deal? Is it the CD-ROM? Or is it something else?

I believe the specs are a Duron 1GH with 256MB RAM.

And btw, the CPU fan is like a narrow tower. Never seen anything like it before.

UPDATE:

Did a memory test with DocMemory. It passed.

I found that the floppy was not plugged in. So, I plugged it in, and Windows setup loaded a lot faster. I thought that was the problem, but I just reformatted the HD in NTFS, and it hung at "Setup is formatting..." at 100%.

Any ideas?

Just restarted it and Setup was copying the files OK, but now is hanging at 42% on file pala.ttf. Each time it hangs at a different point. Anyone know what the deal is?
