Hanging Basket Plants.

IGBT

Lifer
Any thoughts on what's the best plants for outdoor hanging baskets?? My baskets see about 5 hours of direct sunlight in an arid desert climate. I was thinking of trying ground cover plants and let them hang over the sides. Another thought is climbing roses and let them spill over the sides of the baskets.

There are varieties of petunias that will grow to hang over the sides. I like the "Night Sky" and "Starry Sky (blue)" varieties.

Well, Wandering Jew is an avid grower and likes to dangle a few ropey branches. (The purple stuff.) My sister grows it out in West Texas from a hanging pot, but it might be indoors, not sure.

I've got some Creeping Jenny going in a tall pot, it cascades over the sides in a bright yellow-green curtain. But it's at home in low-lying areas that stay moist. Pretty eager to grow. Looks good draping over a retaining wall. But I'm in a more humid zone.

Hey, how about Portulaca. It has bright flowers and a trailing habit (as it's called). An odd type of succulent.

I'll look into it all..for the time being I'm trying "Creeping Myrtle" in a hanging pot in the yard so we'll see how that goes...

What size baskets? Seems like it's going to be a constant watering burden in an arid desert climate if you don't pick something slow growing and small max size.
