5/8 sheetrock on 12 gauge metal studs.
70" display that weighs 170 pounds
Mount is approximately 4' wide and 12" deep.

I assume the studs are worthless as far as mounting to them.

So I could get at least 5 toggle bolts in the two rows that take the fasteners. I saw a study where 3/4" toggle bolts were rated for 300# of shear strength.

Or, I could go with a piece of 1/8"steel or .5" plywood toggled to the wall that is just a tad smaller than the display and toggle the mount through that.

Any other ideas?

Things I will not do:
Buy a lighter display
Tear down the wall and rebuild it
Eat a bag of di... :)

If they are really 12 gauge studs they will hold a lot of weight.

Unistrut is 12 gauge.

If you want something clean looking and were willing to cut the drywall, you could put wood blocking between the metal studs.

use toggles through the metal studs. you can use a step bit instead of a twist drill to make drilling easier. This will be the strongest option.

Snaptoggles. If you can mount any of them through a metal stud, all the better, but if not, five of them will be more than adequate. Shear strength is not what you're concerned about.

(*Edit* Now that I think about it, it would probably be damned hard to drill a 1/2" hole through a metal stud in a wall. I'm not sure I'd even try it, and think you'd most likely just make a big mess.)

Tested below at the 2:00 mark. Four of them held 284 pounds in 1/2" drywall. You be using five and will be mounting them in 5/8" drywall.

Looking at the Hilti fastener chart, one #10 self drilling screw in a 12 gauge stud has a pullout strength of 765 lbs, pullover of 1370 lbs, and shear of 1645 lbs.

Probably use two screws just to be safe.

Thanks guys. The studs are stronger than I anticipated.
I'll go through the studs and use hollow wall toggles.
