What do you guys think, just gathering a little info before I start spending.

desktop P4 cpu based notebooks are good too, but the centrino (Pentium-M) laptops offer a little longer battery life and less heat which is a nice plus.

P4Ms are not so good I hear, don't know why though

Best gaming laptop = highest possible centrino speed (the top-of-the-line centrinos are about on par with the highest speed p4ms, and have the advantages you mentioned), radeon 9600pro mobile, 1gb ram, 7200rpm HD, UXGA screen, etc.

I'd personally recommend the laptops I saw on this site, they had some incredible deals. Ignore the desktops though, they are very pricy.

The models in the link above are made by an ODM called Clevo. Clevo also make Sagers - which you will find considerably cheaper from different resellers. The L company, or whatever it is called, just uses catchy marketing terms and any decent new feature they offer (PuRAM) is hugely expensive and optional.

For example, you can save $160 on their "Studio Gamer Laptop" by going with your normal Sager reseller (and the Sager I compared it to has 20 more GB of 5400 RPM HD).

The best laptop you can get is a 3.2Ghz/2GB DDR/80GB HDD/ATi 9600 Mobility (Centrino just isnt fast enough mate).

Sigh - Alienware is overpriced, as is Voodoo. You truly shouldn't overlook Sager. Clevo used to make the older Alienware model, Hypersonic-PC and Voodoo also use(d) Clevo designs, but they are all overpriced.

High end Sager - P4 3.2GHz (800 MHz FSB), up to 2GB DDR400, ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB DDR, (2) 60GB 7200 RPM Drives in RAID 0, DVD-RW Drive, 16" SXGA Display, etc.

*That Farrotech model is also a Clevo/Sager 4760.

I wonder how many people have even played with a 1.7ghz pentium-m/centrino laptop, those things are insane when paired with a hitachi 7200 rpm HD.
The speed is very fast, yet the battery life still lasts long. Very reasonable tradeoff I think from a desktop p4 cpu laptop.

the desktop p4 cpu laptops are nice... but don't seem very practical.

I have 'played' with both yes, and the P4 3.2Ghz will beat the living daylights out of a Centrino 1.7Ghz. Centrino's are faster clock-for-clock, but not 200% faster mate.

Well when asking about a gaming laptop, which I thought was implicit, would take battery life and size into account. So I asked "preferably centrino"
Of course when you take the top of the line processor from a desktop and compare it to a mobile part, its going to be faster. There is no question then.
The 1.7ghz centrino laptops are good enough, and then some. Plus they can be thinner and last longer, which if you are gaming wirelessly is kind of important.

If there was only a 1.7GHz Pentium M coupled with a 9600 pro mobility.............

If you could actually multitask on a laptop...

Having a 3.2 GHz processor with such a slow disk system is like having a 900 hp front wheel drive car! :Q

Cheers!

Lol that thing is 12 lbs and gets less than 2 hours of battery life and im sure a lot less gaming. Thats less laptop and more smallish desktop.

The voodoo m460 is probably the best gaming laptop that is not a monster. Its also around 3000, but it does look pretty damn nice and its only 5.5 lbs. I dont think anyone makes a centrino with the 9600 graphics which kinda sucks. Dell has one with the geforce 5650 but apparently it is not even close in preformance to the 9600.

yeah I guess its probbly better to wait for a centrino/9600pro system to come out, put a hitachi 7200rpm hd in there and that notebook will be fast as hell.

hah, hopefully by the time I save up the money, it should be out

Heheh. Those are portable desktops IMO.

The 15" weighs almost 10 lbs with the battery, uses a desktop CPU, and has terrible battery life. And it looks like @ss.

I say stick with the Centrino 1.7 (preferably under 6-7 lbs in a 15" size) unless all you want to do is go to LAN parties or whatever.

And I wouldn't touch Liebermann Inc stuff with a 10 foot pole, at least for now. Despite their statement that they're legit, the site still smells of scam.

Desktop 9800 pro? How long does the laptop battery last? 6 minutes?
