Handicap parking spots

My car was sitting inside the lines just off to the side of the handicap parking spot. Vehicle running, me inside waiting on GF. A cop comes up to me and starts being an assbag about me being there. Basically yelling at me (raised voice) about how that isnt a parking spot and how i'm not handicapped and waiting doesnt give me the right to be sitting there. Note that the drive i'm at is only wide enough for 1 1/2 cars to pass through at a time so I figure i'm better off not being in the way and being able to move if someone needs the parking spot.

What do you guys think. Did the guy have a right to be a jerk about it? He didnt even ask questions and just started going off about how I wasnt handicapped and that wasnt a parking spot.

Quick edit: Is it actually illegal to WAIT, not park in the hashed lines on the ground if your car is on and you are in it??

EDIT: Ther were no other spots. The only other option was block traffic. Thru traffic area is only wide enough for 1 1/2 cars or so. So for me to wait in the thru traffic area would mean I'm blocking traffic.

EDIT: No vehicles were using handicapped spots so if someone was to pull into one then I would know they needed me to move.

i would say the cop was justified. The diagonal lines are for no vehicles at anytime if i recall correctly. I dont know if its against the law - ie, a punishable offense, but it is pretty wrong to stand your car in diagonal lines.

Cop: right
You: wrong

Yes its illegal. You wouldnt believe how many people do that and block me in or out of my van. I will call the police if that happens.

No difference in sitting in your car on the lines or in the handicap spot "being able to move if someone needs the parking spot." If the lines are the ones I'm thinking about, they are there to allow room for lifts and such from specially equipped vehicles, not for parking or waiting.

He was right. You're not handicapped and it isn't a parking spot. Sorry. 🙁

block you in?... how could i block you in if i'm waiting in my vehicle to move it if necessary

I'm not saying i'm right. I realize that after the fact. But had the guy been nice about it maybe i'd feel like I was wrong. He was just a total deuche

How would you know I need you to move. People do this ****** all the time...they cant tell than i'm about to drop an 800lb lift on their roof, and I certainly cant get out and ask them to move.

Whether he was nice or not has no effect on whether you were right or wrong. You were wrong. That was what this thread was about 🙂

Park in a regular spot and stop being so lazy. You were in the wrong. Too bad the cop didn't give you a ticket.

There was no vehicle in either handicapped spot so if someone was to park in them i would be able to move with EASE and then the spot being used would tell me that the person would need me to move.

Then find another lot to sit in or drop your girlfriend off and go drive around for 3-5 minutes or until she's done. The cop was a dick so that your sorry @$$ won't pull that crap again. 🙂

actually, you could have driven around until the person you're waiting for came out. so there are other options than to do something illegal just because it's convenient.

You parked where you were not supposed to park. Parking, waiting... whatever... you should not have been there. You think you were not wrong because you did not like the way you were told you were wrong? Would you have felt any different about the cop if he handed you a ticket with a smile?

i dont know if you have read the thread or not but the consensus is that you are WRONG....

why do people ask for opinions and when given them and they dont agree they become irate and defensive...

how many other ways do you need to be told you are in the wrong wrong wrong
