I know of the Jornada's (680/680e/720/728), and the NEC MobilePro (780, 790, 900, 900c). Both products look good, but how well do they work? Which OS is better? What other products are out there that are similiar?

I like my Dell Axim x30 Pocket PC, nice looking screen and uses Windows Mobile 2003. I was able to snag one through my school for $100, shouldnt be too much more on ebay. Now I use it for GPS navigation in my car, I download and play all sorts of well made games and proggies, and play clear sounding MP3's that I got a 1 gig SD card for. Very nice unit and convenient to have, you can even overclock it some 300 mhz faster.

I have looked at the Axim before, was tempted to buy one at a very good price but I thought it would just end up being under-used like the one I have now. Axims are just another variety of PDA's. I like having the keyboard attached, I know some people are gonna say to just pickup a laptop but you can't beat the size of HPCs. I'm trying to get away for PDA's because it does not have an attached keyboard, I don't want a seperate keyboard. I currently own a Palm IIIc with Belkin keyboard which is nice but the Palm is too slow and having to pull out the keyboard everytime is a bother. The main reason I don;t use my PDA for anything else but an address book is because it takes to long to type with the on-screen keyboard. Graffitti, at least on my Palm (v4.1 PalmOS), is to inconsistant.

What do you think of the OS? Have you used CF attachments like wireless, cameras, or HDs without problems?

Fair enough, I understand your desire for a physical keyboard attached to the unit, I'm fine with mine being onscreen but does become an annoyance at times. Bottom line, the PalmOS is more user friendly and practical for mobile applications to run on, but I like how Windows Mobile emulates the Windows OS, however that also means it has some bugs and you may need to do a soft reset now and then but for the most part things run smoothly. There are no CF modules on Axim's but there is an SD slot which I find pretty easy to use and makes it easier to carry about 3 or 4 different cards with you. The x30 comes with a built-in Bluetooth and 802.11b antenna too which is the best part of it, I use Bluetooth to connect to my GPS unit and the Wi-Fi antenna to surf the net at my house, at school, or at some place like Starbucks. I guess it depends on what you want from an HPC, a PalmOS if you just want an easy to use mobile computer that lets you play the occasional game and keep track of appointments and crap, or a PPC if you want a Windows like environment with plenty of applications at your dispossal and the ability to do some advanced tricks and treats. Theres my 2 pennies for ya, enjoy the read.

Thanks. Basically all I'm looking for is a mobile notepad and web browser. Not much into games.
Yeah, Axim has a SD. Was thinking about another PDA.

I'm looking for a PDA too. I've read reviews on the Palm Zire 31, 72, Tungsten T3, some HPs etc. They all seem to have mixed user reviews so I'm a bit hesitant. I currently have an "ancient" Palm IIIe which I would like to retire. My boss just got a Zire 31, which was cheap, but the screen quality didn't look too convincing. It sounded OK though.

If you have any use/need for a cell phone consider a Palm Treo 600/650.

Palm OS 5.4, physical keyboard, cell phone, camera and PDA all in one.

OK, so I bought the Palm Tungsten E yesterday. So far, so good. A couple of things I've noticed with this model:

1. It's easy to leave fingerprints on it (it's made of metal).
2. It's painfully slow hotsyncing multimedia files to it (like 3-4 mins for an mp3???). I discovered transfering files via Realplayer is a lot faster.

But, it looks nice and it was reasonably priced. In comparison to the Zire 31, the quality of the display is significantly better.

But, it's a fairly basic PDA, that's all I need. I looked at the HPs as well, but they seemed a bit cheap,

I heard that before about the Tungsten's, leaving fingerprints. I wonder why its slow during transfer. I remember my Mini-Disc player, it took a good ten minutes to fill up a cartridge. But then again, I could stuff 30 mp3s into it.
