Handguns. Oh, what to buy.

I am taking my time selecting one, thought I would run it buy ATOT.
My thoughts are all over the place in the pricing bracket.
For example, a S&W Sigma series. Or a USP. My problem is that I like almost all semi-autos.

On the cheap:
-S&W Sigma.
-Taurus PT92.

Mid Range:
-Glock 30 (or a lot of Glocks, depending on what caliber I settle on). Started on Glocks. Love the way they feel.
-S&W M&P. Another great plastic fantastic. I shoot this a lot with my buddies. They are built very well.
-Springfield XD series. Again, great composite gun. And I have shot both 9mm and .40 in compact and regular versions. Awesome. My only problem is spare parts or servicing require it to be mailed in to Springfield.
-Cheap versions of the 1911. Like the Rock Island Armory. Ugh, any input here?

Pricey:
-HK USP. Enough said.
-A nice 1911.

As you can see, I mostly favor composite body guns, save for some exceptions like the 1911 and PT92 (poor man's Berreta?).
My only problem with 1911's is some had extractor issues a few years ago. And of course the firing pin concern if I were to drop it muzzle first.

My other issue is the trigger feel. I am used to Glock, not that they are much different, but I am all over the place on any other handgun. I am sure dry firing would fix it, but damn, it's annoying.
Another small gripe is my hand size. I am a freak with huge palms, long thumbs, but stubby fingers. Not sure how that works out, but I cannot be text book when it comes to holding it.

Sucks, I was planning on buying a decent bolt action 308. Maybe waiting for Savage to start shipping the Accu-Stocks. But, politics are clouding my decision.

It doesn't matter. No gun is perfect, no gun will save you when you need it. A cool head does more to help you in a tight situation than anything.

Not really looking for that. I have a Remington 870 for that. And no, I don't reach for it every time I hear a noise at night.

Sounds like you are leaning Glock, which makes perfect sense to me (as a Glock owner). They are excellent, extremely sturdy and reliable weapons. I do find it a little odd that you are thinking of a 1911, which has relatively little in common with a Glock (other than its consistent trigger pull, which is a significant common feature).

My own view is that DA/SA designs are a bad idea and border on dangerous due to the different trigger pulls, so I have elected to reject the many excellent DA/SA pistols on the market, including Sigs (my favorite DA/SA guns), USPs, 92FSs, etc. I myself like Glocks, but among DAO pistols I think the Para Ordnance LDA pistols have the nicest triggers out there. I would at least check out a rental LDA at your local range, because they are wonderful guns. If I were a concealed carry guy I'd probably get a single-stack LDA.

Get a nice used SIG on gunbroker. I found 2 for about $500 a pop.

Anything specific in mind? They have seem to offer a variety of styles. And I honestly don't know a lot about Sigs.

Riiight...You really didn't state what you wanted it for and you're kind of all over the place in the guns you're considering so I just figured it was your first gun.

Just buy a Glock. I've fired many and own one myself along with a number of other firearms. It's an excellent gun and one you could trust your life with...or use to do, well, whatever it is you want to do with it.

Sorry if my reasoning was not clear.
I want a handgun that feels good, reliable, and it's mostly for gun range fun. Sure, it might have the slightest chance of being drawn out for defensive purposes, but it's not something I would look forward too.

My suggestion is to stay away from S&W. I didn't like it because of the trigger pull on first vs second shot. If you're looking into 9mm, I like glock 19 personally, but the overall suggestion here is to go someplace you can rent and try out a bunch. Personally, I just have my Walther P22 which I love.

I own a Glock 17, a Colt Series 80 Officer's Model .45 ACP, a Smith & Wesson model 629 with 8" barrel, a Beretta Tomcat .32 ACP and a Para Ordnance 7.45 LDA along with a number of long guns. They are all excellent guns with different purposes.

Honestly, I enjoy the S&W for making loud booming noises at the range and poking holes in paper targets; it is very accurate once you get used to the recoil. The Glock is the easiest to shoot well because of low recoil and ability to send lots of metal down range quickly and accurately...and it is one of the most reliable handguns I've ever owned.

I've owned a number of other handguns through the years that I've traded or sold but these that I have now I like. You can't go wrong with Glock and I think Sig Sauer is also top notch. The Colt wasn't worth a crap when I bought it but it was the second handgun I purchased and I've put a fair amount of money into making it better courtesy of King's Gun Works in Glendale over the years so it's a keeper. I've never liked Colt revolvers, their double action trigger is crap. I much prefer the smooth double action pull of the Smith & Wesson revolvers.

I could say the same about Deawoo. Their torture test was brutal.

I'm just sayin'.

personal preference I guess.... I have shot both quite a bit and like the Springfield a lot more.

My hands are big and my thumb rubbed on the takedown lever of the XD45 that I had. Key word had. Other then that I liked it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the CZ SP-01.

Also, Don Vito, those guns you mentioned that you look past because of DA/SA, they have DAO versions. Sig has their DAK, HK has their LEM. Have you ever tried the Sig SP2022? They have a nice trigger and are polymer. OP should try it out as well.

I'd have said Sig P250, but OP is in california like me. 🙁

I have big hands and that isn't a problem for me.... never said the Glock was a bad gun as you are insinuating, I just prefer the XD > the few glocks I have had/shot/used

Jules-Good info, really appreciated.

Gothgar - I have nothing against the XD, it's build quality or the such. My only gripe is the servicing concerns and how it handles for me and my own shortcomings. But that hasn't stopped any of my friends from buying any. And none of them are showing any signs of regretting it.

I really think I do need to rent some on the firing range. You guys are convincing me of that.

Someone brought up the CZ's in conversation earlier. They also stated it's most popular gun in law enforcement. Hard to believe, but maybe it's true.
