1911s are not great starter guns IMO because of their design and power (unless you enjoy flinching). I really don't want to get into a reliability debate about the 1911 (I happen to like the guns) but many modern semi-autos do surpass it in this category. The sights on the Springfield GI also suck complete ass.

$450 puts you solidly in the Glock and SIG range, among others.

Also, as you said, it is certainly cheaper to practice with 9mm. Important to consider when you're going to be spending a lot of time and ammo practicing.

I'd put my two cents in for the H&K USP; they are bit pricey, but worth every penny.

I once put 3000 rds (3 cases) through my USP .40 between cleanings and not a single jam or misfire.

A good cheap revolver in .357/.38 would be a Ruger SP101. Very cheap at $400 new and unbreakable.

Glocks are a dime a dozen but they are of unique design; you either love them or hate them.

If you want a bad-ass gun...get a 10mm Kimber. Kimber is a really really great gun for the $ and 10mm rounds pack some serious punch & have good penetrating power because of their high velocity (about 1100fps).

Myself, I love the way it feels.. solid, connected and accurate. If you are that insistent that others are better, I will check some more out. The Beretta is not going to be sold though. I probably have a similar opinion of Glock but we will see.
