Handgun Online Purchase?

I have looked at it in the past. Typically I could not find a deal worth it. You still need to find a FFL dealer in your area to finish the transaction. Typically they will charge a fee. Usually the gun + shipping + the fee is so close to the in-store price I just buy it.

Plus I can inspect the gun I'm buying in the store (if buying used).

Yes, I've bought a handgun and 2 or 3 rifles online. You have to ship them to your local dealership. Call the dealership first and ask them about it, and get all of their info including fax number. Give that info to the place you are buying it from. The selling dealer talks to the receiving dealer, gets a copy of their firearms license, and makes sure that it's OK to ship to them.

I like to check out aimsurplus.com every couple weeks, they're always getting interesting items in. I bought a used Sig Sauer pistol from them for something ridiculous like $279. As someone else said, shipping a gun usually adds ~15 s/h and ~25 fee from the receiving dealership, so if the online price is only within ~40-50 bucks of what your local places charge, it isn't worth it.

I've almost never seen a gun from buds + shipping + $20 FFL transfer fee come out to more than a local shop + massive firearm tax. Remember, online is tax free, and for firearms thats HUGE is most states. 95/100 times you are getting hosed by buying a firearm at a local gun shop.

Its the same as buying something from amazon vs best buy.

Sure. The transaction will have to be completed through a licensed firearms dealer though (FFL). Since you aren't buying from the FFL they will charge you a fee to do the transfer and paperwork, sometimes as low as $10 but I've seen them as high as $100. You need to find an FFL in your area and talk to them first before you buy online. A lot of FFLs don't like having guns shipped to them without notice.

Check out Gallery of Guns, it's an online buying system that lets you deal directly with FFLs in your area. Gunbroker is a good place as well.

If you get a C&R FFL license ($30), you can ship any gun built 50 years ago or older, straight to your door.

That included 1911, AR15, most revolvers, etc.

You can get a CZ-82 for $200 shipped to your door 🙂
Of course, you could also get one for near that at a gun show.

How does that work with the date? Some guns may only have a serial number and no date code. Who exactly has the burden of proof to show that the gun is older than 50 years?

just checked now on a ruger gp100 as that was the last gun i looked at in a cabelas. it was $475 + 6% pa tax = $503.

looked at the same gun on Bud's (apparently they don't charge shipping for firearms, which is odd) - $468 + $25 transfer fee = $493

Hmm, $10 difference to have the gun in hand the same day i paid for it, plus i actually get to look at it ffirst? man, i'm so getting hosed there. 🙄

not quite that simple. It's not ANY gun, there is a list. also, show me a site that sells C&R eligible AR-15s. I've never seen one.

You also have to keep record of all of your purchases made with the C&R license.

I think the burden is on the seller.

http://www.atf.gov/publications/firearms/curios-relics/

This link has a pdf of all of the guns that qualify.
Many depend on the manufacturer and they have to be added to the list before it can qualify.
For instance, I believe only Armalite and Colt Sportster AR15s qualify.

Most online retailers put C&R guns in a category, so you don't have to worry about it.

Basically the ATF has a list of guns that are considered C&R eligible. You get a packet with huge book of rules and the list of guns plus other stuff when you receive your license. If its not on the list, you can send info to them and they will make a determination.

True... I have never shopped for one.
My immediate search hasn't found anything other than Auctionarms and Gunbroker (auction sites).

I know it's on the list though.

So you find a case where a firearm is only marginally cheaper (still cheaper though) from an online source vs. your local dealer, and you bust out the eye rolling? As if that debunks what I said?

How about this, pontifex. Go to your local gun shop and look at 10 guns at random. Then look up those same 10 guns on Buds, or any other online gun store. Post back with your results.

Thanks

*edit*

and 10 seconds of searching I found the gun for $452.

I think you also have to make sure the FFL is in your state. AFAIK you can't purchase handguns outside your state.

No, you can even buy handguns from private parties from out of state. It just has to come into the state by going first to an FFL who does the paperwork for you.

Budsgunshop is the standard I think. Pretty consistent low prices unless you have a really good store around.

Not as good as many others, but here in Sacramento, I get charged $60 per DROS that is performed. For example.

$800 gun at a local store
15 DROS fee
70 bucks tax
$885 total.

Find same gun online for $700 + $60 fee = $760.

Usually if the total is within 10%, I'll buy local.
