Question Handbrake 1.3.3 - Benchmark your System - New benchmark criteria

Back in 2018 ElFenix posted the original Handbrake Benchmark Thread. I thought it was cool so I started updating the thread with a results table. With his permission I'm posting an update to that thread. If you want to participate we're going to tighten up the testing methodology (see below) so the results provide data better for analysis.

I'll update the second post of this thread periodically with results.

1. Use the following version of Handbrake with the built-in h.265 mkv 2160p60 preset
HandBrake-1.3.3-x86_64-Win_GUI.exe
Don't forget to turn on logging in Handbrake so you can retrieve your time. Tools>Preferences>Advanced>Logging
Once this current version is replaced you'll be able to access this version from the following link.

2. Report average effective clockspeed using HWinfo - https://www.hwinfo.com/
I'm sure there are better ways to do this using the logging feature but here's how I did it. I downloaded the portable version, which runs from the exe file.

Run the exe and select "sensors only." You only need this window open.
Minimize the sensors window so you can have it and Handbrake visible at the same time. Select the "average effective clockspeed" line so you can spot it easily. It will highlight.
Note the icon for "reset min/max/average values and timer" in the bottom right area of the window, it's the clock icon.

Start the handbrake but don't start/reset the timer until handbrake is actually encoding video. Record the average effective clockspeed right before handbrake finishes the encode. It should settle in pretty quickly after the encode starts and not change during the encode.

3. Report "Total CPU Usage" (also from HWinfo)

4. Report your encoding time, CPU Model, and RAM specs (amount, speed, latency)

Fifth attempt (in the fourth I forgot the slow memory after loading dafaults in the bios). Now it did not throttle. Completely stock setting including the ridiculous max power draw enabled.

From Computerbase tests it s obvious that there s at least 15-16 threads used, besides Zen 4 has better IPC in this app, FI the 7700X is 10% faster than 8 ADL P cores at same frequency.

There’s a limit but it changes. For my 5900X, dvds are like 25% of cpu, Blu rays are about 75% max, 4K will max it out.

i don’t know when 4k starts seeing diminishing returns.

You are right. I forgot Handbrakes scales better with x265, it's only good for 8 or so cores with x264. 5900X to 5950X scales almost perfectly so it's definitely using 16 cores. We don't have a 12900K to compare the 13900K or even the 12700K score unfortunately. Those results would give us some insight as to what the E's are doing.

My rig is the 12700K in the results. Subtracting my 8+4 time from my 8+0 time shows a 37 second improvement in the encoding with the 4 E's active. Extrapolating my CPU to 8+8 would give a score of 135 seconds. A real 12900K should do a little better because it clocks higher.

8+12 should be about 98 seconds and 8+16 about 61 seconds. 13900K is 32 threads so I don't know why 111 seconds for the 13900K, it should be faster. But I'm probably (once again) missing something!

I ran the benchmark with 13900K in 8+8 config with all P cores overclocked to 5700 MHz and no power limit, the performance dropped to "average encoding speed for job is 13.822989 fps".

So this setting did not work well compared to default settings with no power limit.

BTW the application crashed with all cores at 5900 or 5800 MHz, so that was useful for testing stability of all P cores.

I don't think it was using all 32 cores and 64 threads through the encoding process. I remember this version of handbrake not using all cores threads of higher core count CPUs in the past. When I ran the encoding again, I opened up task manager and go to the performance tab, the CPU utilization isn't near 100%.

I reset the HWINFO64 info right before encoding and hit the print screen key right after it finished for the HWINFO64 information. The CPU clock speed info is correct, its 4.425 all core.

It's not a handbrake issue and I wouldn't expect any changes going forward, that's why h.265 is a thing.

h.264 was introduced in 2004. I don't know what they thought about number of cores in the future, but the encoding algorithm they came up with does not scale all that well with cores by today's standards.

I tried encoding a movie using the H.265 profile. It was going to complete in a very long time on a 48-thread Xeon server with hardly 25% utilization. Changed the setting from peak frame rate to constant frame rate and it encoded in less than 15 minutes. Even then, all cores did not reach full utilization which was strange as this is supposed to be a highly parallel task. I don't know much about codecs but it seems there are significant computational bottlenecks in the video encode process that can't be accelerated by general purpose hardware. I was disappointed, to say the least.
