I am looking for a gps that will do a few different things.
1. backtracking and marking locations when i am working in the field ( unpaved, un-named roads, but most are still on many of the gps maps (co-worker has a nuvi that works well).
2. similar service when hiking/driving out in the desert.
3.while boating on inland lakes with canoe/kayak, or possible future small sail boat (20 or so feet).
I have been looking at the Garmin Oregon 450 series and have found these seem to have the features i am looking for. I also see the older gpsmap 60csx that has many of the same features. I am looking to spend around 400 or so. What other brands are out there? I see Lawrence and they have a good rep in the boating industry. Magellan, Delorme (we have charts made/printed by them).
___ extra info___
I do not need a gps that tells me where to go, first, because i am a pretty good navigator with a chart and compass and my blackberry has sprint nav on it, which is pretty good for around a city and on a highway, has good databases to search for food/hotel. my phone does not have a compass, takes forever to get a signal and is simply not going to work for my other uses.
I am on the fence weather i want NEMA support or not, in the past I have used it with maptech terrain navigator on my laptop to map routes live on USGS quads but do not foresee me really needing this function anymore. the advantage would be that it would be able to communicate with other marine electronics if i pick up a sailboat.
the camera on some of the new models is a complete wast and i will not pay for all that so i can drop it and break it/ its another place to leak when it gets wet/saps battery life, memory etc.
the other thing is maps... i know that i will have to get bluecharts if i use it for marine use, but i will have to buy marine maps no-matter what i do anyway. it would be nice to have the surface maps already in the unit, but i am asking a lot at this point and i know it.
